It is high time for Europe to stand with Taiwan given both face the same threats from authoritarian neighbours, the island’s foreign minister said on Monday, seeking to find common cause with European democracies during a visit to Poland.
Taiwan, which China views as its own territory, has found an increasingly sympathetic ear in parts of central and eastern Europe since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, even though almost all European countries only maintain formal diplomatic ties with Beijing and not Taipei.
Addressing the Warsaw Security Forum, Taiwan Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung said economic security was inseparable from national security.
“Today, authoritarian regimes, namely China, Russia, Iran and North Korea, have formed an axis of upheaval to challenge the rule-based international order. China is largely seen as the decisive enabler behind Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,” he said.
Europe faces threats from Russian hybrid operations, similar to what Taiwan faces from China, like cyber attacks and military exercises, Lin added.
“It is high time for Europe to stand with Taiwan, to forge a robust coalition for our shared values and halt the expansion of authoritarian regimes. Taiwan is ready to work with Europe; is Europe ready to work with Taiwan?”
…
Hell no.
China can be a strategic partner as an alternative to the US. Becoming independent from the US won’t be possible if we piss on all other great powers as well. If we piss on China, the only one we’ll not have bad relations with will be India.
The Taiwan issue has been one of the US, not Europe. If the US ever deteriorates enough to allow for a continuation of the Chinese civil war, we shouldn’t intervene. Let it come to a final conclusions and then matters are settled. Regardless of how it turns out.
The liberalism-authortitarianism schism is a false one. It’s not what defines or divides the world in reality. It’s merely a distraction.
An increasingly autocratic US doesn’t make China less authoritarian. China is not a reliable partner that can be trusted as the government is only interested in its own agenda. What countries are China’s partners anyway? There are none.
That is the vast majority of countries and exactly what makes China reliable.
We have to separate propaganda from fact. China has been expanding it’s trade and influence in the third world massively these past two decades. That includes a long list of countries that have reliable trade and diplomacy with China.
They don’t externally propagandise their actions either. Chinese functionaries in foreign companies aren’t a hidden secret that’s publicly denied or anything. That is well known and acknowledged. And something that could be negotiated away by countries with any amount of power.
Which ones?
All African nations. A big part of South-East Asia and all of Central Asia, the majority of South America.
You could look at the Belt and road initiative. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belt_and_Road_Initiative
China doesn’t see them as partners as it puts it’s “partners” in debt and then takes control of critical infrastructure when the debtees can’t pay in a timely manner. It is right out of the US imperialist playbook.
Also if you had actually blocked me, I wouldn’t be able to reply to your comments.
Which country has ever benefited from China’s BRI?
Addition: Just an hour or so ago I posted, “As Chinese-owned businesses grow across Africa, so does local backlash”. Would really love to hear what countries you have in mind that benefited from China’s BRI.
You’re clearly not here for good faith discussions. If all you want is to be a Washington bot, leave me alone with the disinformation campaigns. I won’t fall for them.
I have already provided you an entire project that benefits the world at large.
Do you really want to doubt that infrastructure benefits countries?
@RedPandaRaider@feddit.org
If you named a country and we looked at the numbers and realities. ‘At large’ is meaningless here as much as you link to Wikipedia. If it’s so clear that the BRI is beneficial for the world, you could easily name an example or two, but you can’t as there is not a single country in Africa, Asia, or anywhere else that has ever benefited from China’s BRI. The one who is arguing in bad faith here is you.
Don’t bother with them. RedPandaRaider called me a nazi for saying “fuck Stalinists” and claimed to have blocked me. Also their post history shows they are a shill for China and calls everyone who isn’t pro China a bot or a CIA agent.
That is such a bullshit claim.
I’m not going through the work to entertain a bot and your fellow bot accounts.
If you’re so sure no country benefits from new infrastructure then you go ahead and prove such an outrageous theory. The burden of proof lies on the claimant.
Just took a look at your profile and yeah it’s clear enough you’re a Washington bot driving an anti-China agenda.

As Lutz Gullner, the Head of the European Economic and Trade Office in Taiwan, said this summer at an event in Taipei, the Taiwan-EU relationship “is based on trustworthy friendship and common values [such as the commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law]”.
The government of China clearly doesn’t share these values.
No country holds these values. It’s just pr speech.
It would be foolish to replace the usa with china or anyone else. The eu doesn’t have to be a puppet anymore; now we can finally break free from external influence.
I’m not saying European countries should switch from their US masters to Chinese masters. It’s tactical trade and diplomacy that will help is become independent. That requires trade and diplomacy with other great powers. Especially one known as the workshop of the world.
