He’s looking for a weaker target that he thinks he can manipulate. He didn’t succeed in LA or Chicago or even DC. But he won’t succeed in Oregon either because the governors have banded together to share information and protect their citizens as much as they can. And because the people he has on the ground are incompetent. And the competent people have been unwilling to break the law for him. Most of the military and national guard are very unhappy with this stuff.

Portland just recently broke the top 50 list of the safest cities in the US.

And of course it is a blue state and Portland is known to be extremely liberal.

If you are a service member, you have a responsibility to refuse illegal and immoral orders. By participating in this administration’s un-American fascist projects, you position yourself as an enemy of the constitution, an enemy of the law, an enemy of the people. We did not accept “just following orders” as a defense the last time we put down a fascist uprising, and we wont accept it this time.

Not to detract from your point, but Nazi Germany and crew were a whole lot more than an uprising. Now to actually detract from your point, the Western Allies were super lax on Nazis during the Nuremberg trials to get the West Germans on their side against the Soviets. If I was a fascist looking at history to figure out whether I’d come out of post-facto trials unscathed, I’d feel pretty good about my chances.

Why would they want to change anything about elections when they are already rigged as fuck and a binary option between 2 parties that circle in power every few years?

To me it looks like they are doing what every authoritarian government does when people start protesting

They won’t be cancelled, that would be unconstitutional.

Instead, ICE will be posted at polling places and intimidate people not to vote.

No, but he literally does not control elections, as they’re run at the state level. It’s why he’s going for more work-around ideas like working to villainize things like vote-by-mail. It’s the same play as it ever has been for Republicans, make it harder to vote so only the rich who support them can actually make it out to vote. Make it increasingly difficult for the lower classes to have their voices heard. The dumb yokels may be the loudest Trump supporters but one of the biggest blocs of Trump voters were business owners and other relatively wealthy citizens.

Yeah it’s way more likely ICE will be used to occupy cities in general. For one, they don’t have the same rigorous health standards that the military does, and for two, they just massively ballooned the budget of ICE for the specific purpose of recruitment. A lot easier to get dumb easily controlled thugs that way then trying to get the military deeply involved. The military being sent out is just Trump trying to pretend he’s swinging his big dick around when it actually shows how weak he must be to be doing it.

Apparently during the American occupation of Haiti, the occupation government wanted to pass a new, wildly unpopular constitution via a referendum. To do this (and ostensibly to get around most of the population being illiterate) they implemented the following system: In the polling station there would be two cards, a white card and a black card, meaning yes and no respectively. The white cards were already on the table, but you had to ask for the black card. From the US marine standing guard to “keep order.” The new constitution passed.

There are a huge number of country bumpkins that saw Portland on the TV during 2020 and assumed/were mislead into believing the whole city burned down and it’s just a smoldering wasteland now. The actual problems were in a relatively small area downtown; most of Portland was unaffected.

I said this is the other thread, but what is the appropriate response? He’s clearly setting the board, and he definitely wants to shoot protesters. He very likely wants sufficient violence to do something dramatic. They even may try to instigate, but have thus far been unable to get the desired response to enable martial law or whatever they plan.

      So you have three options:

      1. Violent response
      2. Non-violent response
      3. No response

Which of these three do you propose?

See, there’s a fourth option: The people with the power need to take action and I don’t mean a “strongly worded letter.” I’m talking about the leaders with the knowledge and the levers to move this along.

If they don’t the inevitability is that No Kings becomes more than the nice picnic it currently is for citizens.

Me? I’m a citizen just like you. I have no power unless you and I become a team.

Update: I watched the full video of what he said and now I really do believe he’s just genuinely that stupid and thinks he’s actually trying to put down a riot. Fox News really plays him like a fiddle.

Portlanders are pretty sarcastic and many people have posted videos of “life in hell” (his audio) set against a beautiful Pacific Northwest summer with boats and farmer’s markets.

I dunno, I’m inclined to think mockery in this case might be the best response for the time being. We’ll see how next month’s protest goes, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were entirely peaceful.

Yep. The fascist party propaganda machines (Fox, OAN, NewsMax) have been reporting that Seattle and Portland are literal war zones for years now. I live in Seattle, and when I travel to the South or the Midwest, I always get the “ohh I’m so sorry” concerned comments from people when they learn where I’m from. So many people think that the cities literally burned down entirely.

I’d see certain commenters repeating that last sentence as just something that was an assumed truth.

Every single time I saw them doing it, I’d ask the usual suspects to show me exactly which cities “burned to the ground”. These same people would basically scamper off, providing no evidence, only to make the same claims again in a few hours/days.

To be war ravaged, it must be at war. Trump is literally declaring war on the American people. And also encouraging the armed forces to kill civilians, unless you think “full force” could possibly mean anything else in a military context.

It’s amazing how people can look at stuff like this and say “gee this guy sure does use some crazy hyperbolic language, I wonder what he can mean by that”. It’s pretty fucking clear.
