I’ve met plenty of nice and genuine Americans and even now I don’t think condemning every aspect of their culture and customs is fair. That being said I wouldn’t want to travel to the US. I actually refused an invitation 3 years ago because the fact that ICE agents get to interrogate me on German soil without providing any ID didn’t sit right with me. Seemed dramatic at the time but I feel quite affirmed as of late. I’d genuinely still like to visit the US some day. They have diverse, rich nature there with some completely different species than we have here. But with things being the way they are I’m in no rush to get there.
completely different species than we have here
pretty sure despite appearances floridians are in fact the same species
“It’s unheard of. It’s happened before in a country at war, in a county where there was a security risk, or risk of health crisis, but in a normal situation, we’ve never seen this kind of turnaround,” Arino said.
At least two of those things are true now though.
I was planning on a possible visit to the US in 2026 to visit friends, but that ain’t happening now. There’s no way I’m willingly putting money into that economy.
Valid, just wonderkind: is personal safety (being an ICE target) in the equation?
Of course that is too. I’d probably be hauled off or sent back for not having a reddit and facebook account because “it’s suspicious”.
Yep, like one of them said trust will be hard to restore.
That Trump is a diva addicted to having a tantrum we knew it, that’s no surprise and I could not care less him being… who he is. But to realize how simple and effort-less it was for him to break existing deals, engagements and decades long alliances while also humiliating Zelensky in the oval office, on TV, without anyone, no one of the other US political powers supposed to prevent abuse of power even protest? And then hear Trump tell all of us we could go fuck ourselves if we did not agree to pay him whatever amount of money he considered fair, like some gangster trying to racket shop owners on the block, in exchange for his ‘protection’? That’s the real issue. At least, it’s for me.
I trusted such an absurd thing would not be possible in the USA, not as easily and not as abruptly. I was completely wrong.
Trust won’t be easy to get back.
Friends aren’t meant to be forever. Sometimes they change and then you need to re-evaluate.
It’s like being “friends” with Hannibal Lecter then being surprised when he eats you
They were never anyone’s friends.
“It may be dangerous to be America’s enemy, but to be America’s friend is fatal.”
WW2, Marshall plan, USSR, Yugoslavia.
How was USA not a friend to Europe in all those situations?
It’s clear we were never friends. More like vassal states.
USA helped us get rid of fascism in WW2. And they helped Europe rebuild with the Marshall plan. They also helped stop genocide in Yugoslavia. And they were instrumental in breaking up USSR, which was a huge European benefit too.
Unfortunately USA has turned more and more to becoming fascist itself.
But for decades USA and Europe helped each other. USA was the more influential part, but Europe accepted and supported Pax Americana freely, we were never actual vassals.
