From what I understand it’s some kind of self-censorship people are engaging in on major social media platforms in an attempt to stop posts with potentially ““problematic”” words being demoted. It leads to this sort of stupid arbitary brushing out of words.

I blame both the platforms for having shitty algorithms designed to whitewash everything, and users who are absolutely obsessed with engagement and likes on their posts so they censor the shit out of so many words. If you have to censor words like “die”, “kill”, “fuck” “nazi” etc. then there’s a big problem.

Fuck big tech, fuck advertisers, and fuck influencers.

The Tik-Tok inspired use of unalive has seeped beyond the boundaries of the app. It drives me crazy when people say that in real life. The dystopian vibes really start to hit when censored online jargon bleeds into IRL. For the sake of pushing past it - it makes me want to kill myself.

I’m sure you’re right. I was thinking “not allowed” but yeah those fucked algorithms are behind everything now. Agree, fuck those three groups.

My solution is to block every individual who ever posts a meme censoring words. I know they didn’t create it, I don’t care, willingly censoring benign words (and sharing this behavior like it’s acceptable) is my line in the sand for dumb Internet bullshit and I will die on that hill. We must not reshape our language for this nonsense.

Downside is I’ll be having a quieter Lemmy experience soon, lol
