Summary

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized her CDU party for relying on far-right AfD support to pass a migration motion, breaking a previous pledge.

Merkel’s rare intervention condemned CDU leader Friedrich Merz for enabling the vote, which passed by three votes.

Merz has taken a stricter stance on migration, blaming Merkel’s 2015 refugee policy.

The issue is central to Germany’s February 23 election amid recent violent attacks. Merkel urged democratic cooperation to prevent such incidents. Her criticism may weaken Merz’s position.

Just an Eastern European perspective on her.

She and her party basically ensured Orbán’s consolidation of power, which at times was very visible. Orbán basically let German car manufacturers underpay workers and abuse them by eroding labour protections, in exchange Orbán was never seriously sanctioned by Brussels for eroding the rule of law. He used EU money to destroy the opposition, and here we are.

The current actual inquiries and sanctions started right as she retired.

Fuck Merkel, she got us on this track.

To be honest I know very little about Merkel/German pol since I am from US but it seems pretty obvious leaders like her set the stage for fascism in Germany as they did here in the US.

Condescending, neoliberal, status quo maintaining shills who can’t or refuse to see the awful wave of fascism coming even as they order the seawall to be dismantled because of “necessary cuts”.

IDK why are you downvoted, Germany has made insane decisions like making the country dependent on Russian gas for quick profits while giving zero fucks about what’s happening in Russia.

I still think about how disgusting the whole period was where German leaders and a good bit of the EU were shitting on Greece for being so irresponsible, like that Greek people just weren’t industrious and responsible enough to put their pennies in the piggybank at the end of the day and that was why the status quo truly was the way it was, and it was just pathetic hearing Germans throw that insult at Greece given how much countries like Germany benefited structurally from the EU.

It is the same old story of wealthy countries putting countries that are poorer, colonized or both under suffocating austerity and benefiting all the while acting condescending towards the people suffering, a story I am very familiar with my country the US doing to others and most pathetically its own poor and destitute.

I speak from a glass house, throwing rocks at my own glass windows. If you live in Germany, do not interpret this lob of a rock as a condescending insult to you but rather a spirited allusion to the same bullshit stories we are both subjected to as we just try to live our lives and be decent humans.

Oh I don’t interpret this as a condescending insult, I thank you for your on point analysis and am happily throwing some rocks.

I also cannot believe that after 16 fucking years of status quo under CDU and Merkel, of nothing moving forward, our minimally left-green leaning government got blamed for everything going wrong in our country and the world and how do you dare not to fix everything within less than 4 years you morons. And the solution - elect the CDU of course! Good thing I stopped drinking or I’d end up in the hospital after the next election.

Well, the US ended up in the hospital after this election, so take heart at least knowing you are beating the US in terms of wellbeing right now!

Yeah I understand she had more than a little bit to do with the current, uh, situation. There.

Funnily enough, just as she was out of the picture, and more reasonable people could turn off the infinite money faucet being almost completely stolen, the Orbán regime is crumbling. They might be out by next year.
