You get ads?
Shut your Pi-hole! My daddy had ads on the TV, and his dad had ads on the radio, and his dad had ads in the paper! I proudly allow ads and tracking!
I wish there was a way on Pi-hole to block those ads on TV yt
Smarttubenext
If you’re getting ads on videos, you need to get you shit together and install uBlock Origin asap.
How well does it work? On my iPad, Safari Adguard can only black out ad content. (Screen is black during ad, and it displays how many seconds of ad is left)
Maybe try out Orion Browser. It has built-in ad-blocking and reliably gets rid of YouTube ads.
Too add to this, it also supports Firefox extensions, so you can use ublock origin as well as sponsor block for a better experience.
Thanks a lot, will try!!
Orion is a pretty nice browser! Quite customisable too. It’s made by the people behind Kagi, the private (paid) search engine.
iPad = Vinegar and Baking Sofa extensions. Get Wipr for the rest of the web while you’re at it!

Or suck it up and pay for the service if you can afford it.
uBlock Origin doesn’t accept donations. That’s the only product in this conversation worth supporting.
Nebula is a streaming service created by creators as an alternative to YouTube and is absolutely worth supporting. We’re not just talking about products here, we’re talking about the creators that make those products viable.
Ya know, I thought we were talking YouTube specifically, but looking back at the OP it just says video, and I guess my brain just injected the word YouTube on it.
So, fair enough, if you’ve got a media service that isn’t run by a bunch of human shitstains, then yea support their work.
If it’s YouTube, don’t give em a cent.
I paid for YouTube premium family for two years at a discounted rate of $3.60/month, well worth at that price, allowed blocking ads on Nintendo switch. was using the pay from another country with VPN loophole, but they just closed it by requiring payment card from that country. oh well, back to Firefox and ublock origin, the prices are too high to pay normally, I couldnt care less about YouTube music, just make videos affordable.
This has never happened to me because I’ve been blocking ads for the last 15 years.
People who complain about ads on the internet are such a weird concept.
Why experience ads if you don’t want to?
Because ads don’t ask for your consent.
Sure they do, I’ve revoked my consent by installing an adblocker I haven’t watched a video ad in probably 8 years.
same. feels so weird when I have to use a users computer and it’s bloated with trash ads. if they’re smarter than the avg bear techwise, I’ll show them ublock, if they’re dicks, they suffer ads. I block almost 1.5 million ad sites in my pihole, it’s sickening how many there are.
Ads are a bit mind-rapey
And you have the agency and ability to either pay for the service or investigate other means of avoiding them. Complaining about them is just annoying.
this is my argument. there isn’t a huge monetary entrance fee, just some time to set things up. the solution is there with minimal effort, your right to complain has left the building, do something about it or gtfo.
but why not say no
uBlock or ReVanced
Tubular also works pretty well
My favorite experience in this regard was watching YouTube on xbox (i know, i know)… They played a 40 minute redbull “ad” on a five minute video. In what sane world should ads be 8 fucking times longer than the content?!?!1?
I had a similar experience on my YouTube TV app, I was watching old history channels in bed, and there was a full length documentary for an “ad”. I could have skipped after 15 seconds or whatever, but I had to INTERACT with the TV before it would resume. I was distracted so it ended up playing like 15 minutes of an hour+ documentary ad.
because people let it happen, why change?
I never use youtube anymore.
Laying in bed bored = netflix
Up and motivated = steam or work
News = Reddthat
Tutorials = text-based articles, no unindexed untranscribed videos that start with the words “hey guys welcome back”
Why would they even make a 40 min long ad for Redbull?
It was just a documentary that was shoved into an ad space. Something about their aerial stunts/races. Dunno. I got like, five seconds into it because FUCK THAT SHIT.
Ernie no!!
The wealthy aren’t a protected class, it’s not a hate crime.
Like hell they aren’t. They’re the most protected class.
only if you get caught.
Or when the skip button appears but only skips to the next ad
Is blocking ads considered a hate crime now?
Corporations are a protected class of people.
Haha jokes on you. I’ve been refreshing the website until the ad refuses to load. It just took 5 minutes
DDOS ads.
Whyyyyy do people do this?? It simply makes no sense.
UBlock as others have said. Or on android newpipe works well.
Edit: as a kind user pointed out, uBlock origin, not uBlock.
uBlock Origin, not uBlock. They’re different - uBlock Origin forked from the original uBlock.
Ah. I did mean origin, didn’t know about the og uBlock. Thanks for pointing that out.
As another one has said, try tubular! It’s newpipe but with sponsor block integrated.
So it just removes the part in the video that they talk about the sponsor? I’ve never heard of such witchcraft.
It’s a community driven auto skipper. Any video that is not brand new will probably be tagged by someone and you can just enjoy it. If you use it in an actual browser you can also tag sections. It’s great.
Nice. I’ll look into it. Thanks.
Me when ublock origin
i find using freetube keeps Ernie calm.
I wish using freetube kept Ernie calm, but it just doesn’t work half the time. Invidious has the same issue. Which is significantly more annoying than just using YT, which Ernie has uBlock Origin for.
I do update freetube about 1 time a week these days (which is approaching the annoyance level of ads).
I used to have a lot more issues with it when I didn’t update so frequently - or maybe that was just a different stage in the arms race; I’m sure the reliability will vary, and eventually the developer of freetube will give up.
I mean, I wont be throwing out the bat or anything crazy like that.
yt-dlp and mpv with sponsorblock still rocks.
is there a similar solution for casual browsing – meaning, allow the algorithm to pick which video plays next? I think yt-dlp is only effective if you know in advance what you’ll be watching
No, mpv integrates yt-dlp if it’s around. Rightclick copy link, alt+f2, ctrl+v, watch.
But there’s:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/sponsorblock/
https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/453320-simple-sponsor-skipper
Never tried it tho.
sounds great, can you tell us how to set up yt-dlp with mpv ?
Install both, done? Or do you mean mpv-sponsorblock?
Edit: or on windows, add yt-dlp to the PATH variable.
