    I’m Icelandic and I’ve never
    a) seen the Northern Lights appear while the sun is out
    b) seen them form that shape, which seems off based on the angle
    c) seen them in summer, which is when this seems to have been taken.

So yeah, my bullshit detector is going off right now.

Here it is on the photographer’s Flickr. I think it says 6s exposure, so the photo doesn’t look like seen through the naked eye.

Well damn, I’m humbled. Thanks for posting the link, I really didn’t think that was real. The picture looks fake to me but I’m not gonna pretend I know better than NASA.

        The permanent link https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap230730.html

The beauty is the aurora overhead, here taking the form of a great green spiral, seen between picturesque clouds with the bright Moon to the side and stars in the background.

Pretty sure that’s the moon, not the sun. Looks like a long exposure.

I’ve never gotten to see them period… Closest I got was a faint green whisp in one small section of sky when visiting a northern state here in the US. I’m determined to see it some day…

I think you’re right. My first thought was that I didn’t think the lights are visible in the summer.
