I understand what you’re saying, but I don’t think the situation is that simple.
The party you’re referring to did play a role during the independence period, no one really denies that. But over the past 17 years, there have also been many serious allegations against them, including authoritarian behavior, enforced disappearances, killings, corruption, and financial scandals.
Because of this, we now see many of their top leaders leaving the country. If they truly believed they were innocent, it would have made more sense for them to stay and fight their cases through the legal system. Even the party’s main leader could have chosen to face the law at home instead of staying abroad.
So in my view, it’s not just about saying they were “not allowed to participate” in the election. There’s a bigger context behind it that also needs to be considered.
At the end of the day, one question remains - how can someone accused of serious crimes represent the people?
Questioning democracy is important, of course, but it’s only fair to look at the full picture before drawing conclusions.
