I spend way too much time thinking about this very topic.

I think I am somewhat well informed, so I’ve been thinking how well I would do in different eras. Of course in these scenarios I assume I can learn the language and communicate with the people of the past.

Anyway, I came to the conclusion than apart from some very specific advances, I’d do very badly. The vast majority of technological discoveries require an already well established base of knowledge and a society to carry it. You can’t singlehandedly kickstart the agrarian revolution early, it requires generations of plant knowledge. Same goes for stuff like metalworking, unless you can easily find soft metal ore and build a furnace out of primitive materials, you are boned - I could maaaaybe find iron ore in certain places, and maaaaaybe build a very basic bloomery, but at that level (amount of material and labor) it’s next to useless, unless I somehow get everybody to blindly follow my vision.

And it just follows like that, for ages on. Maybe I could get something like electricity going a hundred or two hundred years early (I know how to make a rudimentary magnet, or we could use a lodestone. With access to copper and other metals, I can work my way up. But sadlly, I know almost nothing about chemistry which was extremely important for early electric science), but that’s only if there is any actual interest for it - and I don’t really think there would be a lot of it back then, the main use would just be lighting for lords and rich people.

So, in the end, it turns out development IS kinda dependant on material conditions.

Vampire Survivors had it, kinda. It was just miniboss drops, random, like a typical hack and slash, but opening a chest looked like a silly slot machine animation jacking straight into my gambler brain (I don’t actually gamble - I have many other bad habits but I realized I might be wired dangerously back when I played cards for small sums of money with my classmates as a teenager. So I actively swore off gambling and never fell for it, apart from “fake” gambling in video games, where I’m always reminded of why I shouldn’t touch it in real life)

This reminds me of Ursula Le Guin’s “bag theory”: that the first tool humans developed, was not a weapon which is usually taught, like a spear, but rather, a bag, to carry things: for example for berries we picked. A nice reframe from the violent status quo.

If you mean the definite form, then no, Polish doesn’t have it. Learning English as a kid was difficult because no teacher could explain it to me in an understandable way.

I’ve been learning a little Romanian lately though and it is there. Romanian is such a weird language. The vocabulary is like a mixture of five other languages, the grammar has gendered words and conjugations, yet it has a strict word order, unlike Polish that thanks to the complex grammar allows for very free reordering.

From now on I’m calling my girlfriend “my microscopic mite”

My favorite prefix will always be exa. Mostly because of a sci-fi book where one character called himself Exa and there were a few subtle puns with that name (like getting obliterated with a 10^18 W laser)

I used to call this aesthetic “industrial sci fi” and Alien was the best example I knew of. The 70s and 80s were great for sci-fi in general.

I would assume that the big “real-time teaching” thing is meant to imply something like “latest trends/research in teaching”, which does sound nice and efficient, but we all know it’s a lie.
