World News@lemmy.world•Greenland issues ‘strong warning’ as Trump-linked oil firm prepares to drillEnglish
61·1 day agoThat’s the terrifying part, Trump has no capacity for strategic thinking, no regard for anyone else, and no respect for human life. There are only about 56K people on Greenland, and he would treat them like the Conquistadors treated the natives they encountered, or the settlers treated the Native Americans as they stole their lands. Of course there would be huge backlash from Europe, which would likely involve isolating the U.S. from trade, but I doubt there’d be a hot war against the U.S… I could be wrong though. In any event, Trump is a moron, a horrible person, and it will take the collapse of the U.S. to get rid of him.

World News@lemmy.world•Greenland issues ‘strong warning’ as Trump-linked oil firm prepares to drillEnglish
301·2 days agoYou’re spot on. They’re going to do whatever they want, and if their exploratory wells prove reserves Trump will just declare Greenland part of the U.S. and that’s that. There is already a U.S. base on the island and it will be manned with sufficient troops to suppress dissent.

World News@lemmy.world•Russia Puts Giant State Diamonds Up for Auction After Record Gold SelloffEnglish
1·3 days agoJust picking an arbitrary date to figure growth isn’t very helpful, for example I could pick 6 months ago and they would be down by 44%.
Lol. Note this point in my original post, which was directly quoted by you in your response:
I put everything I owned into a 2x gold ETF back in June 2024
Note that gold has just broken out, as Russia’s selling is no longer suppressing the price. My model leads me to expect to see gold make a new all time high above $5600/oz before year end, about a 30% rise from where it is at today, and to top $15K/oz before the end of 2027, though the actual peak in this time frame may well be in the $20k-25K/oz range.
Also, by “shit hit the fan” I meant the economic unwinding of the U.S. and the damage to the world economy coming within in a year. It may take a few more years before WWIII actually gets rolling. I don’t have a good model for forecasting that.

Crimes of ICE@lemmy.4d2.org•Court holds DHS in contempt, accusing it of withholding agents’ phone dataEnglish
16·3 days ago$500 per day is not a meaningful punishment for contempt by the federal government. It isn’t even a slap on the wrist. The court should issue an order to show cause why the head of DHS should not be imprisoned for contempt, and thus start the ball rolling for holding this administration accountable.

Ukraine@lemmy.world•Longest Wildberries Strike Yet: Yekaterinburg, Nearly 1,800km from Border!
2·3 days agoWildberries is a legit military target, as they supply body armor, drone parts, etc. to the Russian military. However, strategically they’re also excellent targets for other reasons. First, they’re bringing the fallout of the war home to everyday Russians, who have been fed a steady diet of propaganda. Imagine the disruption in the U.S. if Iran began blowing up Amazon.com warehouses with impunity. All the small businesses in the Amazon marketplace would be taking hits, and your cheap, freely delivered goods would suddenly become more scarce. The economical centralized online shopping and distribution system is being brought to its knees by Ukraine, and is disrupting the lives of everyday Russians, who are also now having to deal with fuel scarcity. Moreover, Wildberries is highly leveraged, with one of Russia’s biggest bank holding over $10B in loans. If Wildberries goes tits up and leaves the bank holding the bag, that might bring down the bank and cause a cascading financial collapse of the Russian economy. While that may be a longshot, the effort is worthwhile even if it never comes to pass.

I surprised it doesn’t require you to install an app, connect it to the internet, and subscribe to their air flow services. That way they can brick it 2 years later when they introduce the new model.

1381·5 days agoThis is a city of ~25K people, so quite small. Several articles have pointed out that the city, not Flock, bears the costs of the vandalism, so in this instance the city counsel that enabled the city to enter into the contract with Flock to the detriment of its citizens have now burdened the city with a substantial budget item. If the cameras are replaced, you can bet that they will likely be torn down again. At some point there will be a reckoning with voters, and hopefully the idiots that enabled the surveillance state will be voted out.

History Memes@piefed.social•When your drug recovery plan involves moving with Iggy PopEnglish
58·6 days agoFun fact, during this era Bowie worked with Iggy to make Iggy’s first solo album, which became a hit, with the iconic song “Passenger” and, lyrics largely improvised on the fly in the studio. They made the album in a little over a week, well under the time budgeted for, and split the leftover money the label had given them. Read about it here: https://norselandsrock.com/the-passenger-iggy-pop/
I know, right? 1lb of hamburger is around $8 for me. I buy ground turkey instead. It’s generally leaner and I get it for $10 for 3lbs. It doesn’t taste exactly the same, but I like it and it’s way cheaper.
Weed is far less debilitating than alcohol, less harmful, and more fun. Looks like this is a thinking man.
It’s such a great feeling, isn’t it? The most impressive example of this I’ve managed was designing and printing in TPU new tires for my e-skateboard. It took a few iterations before I found the right “no air” design and TPU, as some are harder and less flexible, but in the end I was able to print long-lasting tires that gripped well and were flexible enough to be comfortable.
