  • The pollution is the direct result of other countries outsourcing their manufacturing to exploit chinese labor for increased profits

The Chinese government allows this… Why is this the fault of everyone else? It’s the government’s job to regulate the industry and manage trade.

The point of this statement is not to say “nuh uh the pollution is america’s fault”, it’s to say that this manufacturing would have happened somewhere in the world regardless, and is not for domestic consumption, so it’s a bit silly to say “look china’s polluting so much” when they are producing goods for the entire world. China turning away manufacturing work to “reduce” emissions would not decrease emissions globally, if anything it would likely increase them, as few if any other countries can muster the economies of scale and wide trading relationships that chinese industry have access to

  • I can see how that would feel good, but unless they were selling ads directly to friendly companies (and even disregarding the fact that it seems unlikely there would be many/any given their anticapitalist bent), this would make the project almost no money, while annoying users and opening them up to a lot of criticisms and a lot of overhead work building it and keeping that system running. Plus the vast majority of instances would probably not willingly run ads to benefit the devs, either due to not wanting ads or political disagreements with the devs, so it’d be only lemmy.ml and some micro instances. A nominal donation of $1/month from users like you, who may not want to spend much but does want to support in some way, would make them more money than a years worth of browsing

  • To be clear this “theory” of cancer is not established science, and in fact is (IMO rightly) seen as dangerous, given his opinions on Chemo and Radiation. It seems to be a particular fixation of the lead author on this paper and is also promoted by Crossfit founder and sexual harasser Greg Glassman with his new health grift Metfix and its Broken Science Initiative.

Another source that evaluated his public positions:

Cancer researcher Dr Thomas Seyfried appeared on the podcast in October. He is a proponent of using the ketogenic diet, a diet low in carbohydrates and high in fat, to treat cancer.

But Dr Grimes told us doctors warned patients against restricting their diet while undergoing cancer treatment.

“You could potentially and very realistically get very, very, sick and have a much worse health outcome than if you followed recommended advice from your oncologists,” he said.

In the podcast, Dr Seyfried also suggested radiotherapy and chemotherapy only improved patients’ lifespan by one-to-two months, comparing modern cancer treatments to “medieval cures”.

Not every research paper is credible.

Pay attention to how everyone pushing this stuff are also just advocating for keto or “carnivore” diets in general. That’s one thing, I don’t agree, but its not harmful in the same way as claiming you can use diet to treat basically all cancers.
