It’s time for a new weekly thread! Feel free to use this thread to ask questions, look for recommendations, or provide an update on anime you are watching.
As always, remember to be mindful of spoilers. If you want to know more about how to handle spoilers in this community, check the guide here (also linked in the sidebar).
While I’m glad Boy and Heron won the Oscar for more visibility for anime, I definitely would not have picked it. It wasn’t even my favorite anime of 2023 (that was Suzume) and certainly wasn’t my favorite of the nominees. I would have rather Nimona or Across the Spiderverse won. But I apparently don’t understand the Oscar judges, since I disagree with their choices frequently.
I’m actually all caught up with my current seasonal anime! Up to date with Frieren (excellent!), Apothecary Diaries (very good!), The Dangers In My Heart (good!), Delicious in Dungeon (excellent!), and Solo Leveling (good!). This season has turned out great. I’m sad we’ve only got a couple weeks left, but spring has a lot to look forward to as well.
Frieren really turned around the last couple episodes. They’ve been wild and exciting, but still feel so grounded and real.
I’m very curious where Apothecary Diaries is going to end S1. I’m anime only, so no idea where it’s going.

You and me both. I get the feeling there is a lot of politics within the industry that we don’t see going into these kinds of things.
Frieren really turned around the last couple episodes
I enjoyed them while they were airing, but now that we are in the second round of this arc, I can look back and realize that the show spent a lot of episodes in the first round. The second round with these latest episodes just feels so much more satisfying to me. However, I also appreciate that a large part of that is due to getting to know the characters better after the first round. I don’t know how to do it better, but I can at least sympathize with people that weren’t fans of the first round episodes.

I think Across the Spider-Verse was robbed in this case. Outstanding animation through and through.
First of all, congratulations to “The Boy and the Heron” on winning the Oscar yesterday! I hope to see the movie sometime once it is released for wider consumption.
As for things I have been watching this past week, I have been watching just enough to keep the discussion threads going for a couple shows. Like last week, I am still on vacation, so I am busy doing things other than sitting around watching anime (lots of beach time). So…here are some quick updates:
- Bravern - This show continues to be pretty unpredictable. They pretty heavily foreshadowed the one big thing that happened last episode, but as for the direction of where we go from here, it is anybody’s guess. I am still surprised that this show hasn’t gotten the audience in the West that it has in Japan. One random tidbit I love about it is all the random English phrases that the VA’s use throughout. It never fails to put a smile on my face when they try to say military jargon in English.
- Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic - The climactic battle has finally begun in this show. I have been pondering whether or not I would want to watch a season 2. The pace has been really slow this whole show, only adapting 2 LN volumes over 12 episodes (I think). If the pace didn’t pick up in future arcs, it would be even more painful.
- Metallic Rouge - What can I even say about this one. It’s story is so convoluted and twisted that I don’t think anybody can untangle it. I think this series has been my biggest disappointment in anime in quite some time.
- Tsukimichi - I really like this story, but this past episode was not great. It was basically a lot of conversations about lore/world building and, even though they devoted a whole episode to it, was enormously abbreviated. They have taken lots of liberties in the past with rearranging bits of the story to help it flow, and I feel like they could have rearranged elements of this part of the story to help keep people’s interest better.
- Chained Soldier - This has been doing fine. I won’t say it has been great, but it hasn’t been terrible either. My only complaint really, is that I feel like the world of this series is so much bigger than what we have seen. Season 1 feels almost like a prologue more than anything because we are still meeting important characters even this far into the first season (and haven’t yet met some characters that have been mentioned a bunch).
- Sasaki and Peeps - This show has been a roller coaster in many ways. The story keeps jumping from one genre to the next and the quality of each episode keeps jumping around as well. I only hope that they can land the plane by the season finale.
Meta update: The next couple weekly threads will have certain focuses…
- March 18th - Spring anticipation thread. This will also serve as the official thread for users to request show discussion threads from the bot. Before this post goes live, I hope to finish writing the wiki page on how to interact with the bot to do things like request episode threads.
- March 25th - Winter wrap-up thread as most shows will have aired 11 or 12 episodes by this time.
- April 1st - Spring kickoff thread. April 1st will also be the official start of the new rules where no user-created episode discussion threads will be allowed. The bot will fully take over at this point.
I could do with a recommendation or two. I don’t have much time for anime, so nothing more than 26 episodes. Dubs only so I can build Lego. I’ve enjoyed slice of life like My Dress Up Darling, as well as some classics like Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion. What’s fresh nowadays?
Two thinly disguised slice-of-life shows that are running right now: Tis Time For Torture Princess, and Mr Villain’s Day Off
Both of them are quite wholesome too!
Cheers for the suggestions
End of Evangelion
Akira
Ghost in the Shell
FLCL
Berserk
Komi Can’t Communicate
Trigun
Horimiya
Spirited Away
Perfect Blue
Cyberpunk Edgerunners
Thanks, I’ll have a poke through trailers for the ones new to me!
Frieren has a good dub from the few clips I watched. Currently airing.
Haibane Renmei. Never heard the dub but loved the subbed version. Older show, but a hidden gem IMO.
Thank you, I have seen Frieren mentioned, will investigate.
you should, it’s really good. meanwhile check out vinland saga if you haven’t watched it yet.
I will echo what you have seen elsewhere in that Frieren’s dub is pretty good. I have only seen clips, but it is better than many that I have seen. It isn’t a slice of life, but it is shaping up to be a classic. It is also usually pretty easygoing, so having it on while doing something like building Lego would be totally fine.
Cool :)
Maybe take a survey on which shows we want @rikka to generate episode threads for to start the next season?
Feel free to use the list of shows that I typed up in my poll thread from 2 weeks ago: https://ani.social/post/2496406
Or even use the poll results and replies in that thread as your guide.
Or even pin a link to the poll, and tell everyone to vote there.
Just a quick update that the wiki page about the bot is now up.
My plan is to make and pin the thread where people can request shows in place of this general discussion thread next week. Basically, I plan on enabling any show that any person asks for threads to be made, but if not enough people comment in or upvote the thread for an episode, then the show won’t get future episode threads (exact thresholds tbd, probably just >=1 comment to start out). This weekend I am planning on writing up the wiki page about the bot, so that it will be ready by Monday when that post will go live.
Looking for recommendations on a self contained completed adult anime experience. Maybe Berserk-esque but more modern.
I haven’t watched it, but have heard great things about Pluto that aired last Fall. I believe it is a complete adaptation and has mature themes from what I can gather (despite being inspired by Astro Boy).
Oh dope never heard of it, will check out thanks for the recommendation <3
Hellsing Ultimate
Erased
Mob Psycho
JoJo Part 6
Bubble
Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0

Parasyte: The Maxim
Wow, I can’t believe that was from 10 years ago… But definitely adult, and definitely self contained, and most importantly finished.
Man I had a blast watching that back in the day…err, not that long ago I should say. I feel old now lol
Okay, something more recent then: Cyberpunk Edgerunners
