I couldn’t find a good and recent summary page anywhere, so this is my attempt to put something together.

They started around a decade ago, and they are currently still very active. While the website is a bit out of date in some areas, and the twitter / linkedin doesn’t have frequent updates, their Facebook page has had multiple posts in the past few days (related to their annual meetings), and their GitHub repos have constant activity as well.

From October 15th to 18th, the international courier community and federation will gather in Pamplona-Iruña, hosted by our local member Ziclo-P.

You can find info on their copyleft license here: https://coopcycle.org/en/coopyleft/

The Coopyleft license restricts the commercial use of the software to cooperatives, associations, or limited-profit organizations. Please refer to Article 3 of the license for detailed conditions. [source]

The license prevents non-cooperative companies from appropriating the code and turning it into a profit-driven business.

You can see the map of cooperatives here: https://coopcycle.org/en/cooperatives/

While their website doesn’t mention a Fediverse presence, they do seem to think positively of Fediverse related projects. While I’m personally not local (and swamped with other projects already), I think it could be worth reaching out to them and getting them on here. Their Facebook posts don’t see much interaction, and I think they would get along well on the Fediverse. Here is what they mention about “Are there other similar projects”

Yes. CoopCycle is part of a broader movement of solidarity-based digital alternatives.

Projects like Framasoft, Mobilizon, Cascade, and Open Food France share the same philosophy.

I love it! It’s a beautiful combination of many things I am interested in. Open source software, micromobility, cooperative ownership.

Last mile delivery is becoming more and more important with more people choosing to have groceries and food delivered since the pandemic. There seems to be a push to handle it with robots but I doubt that’s going to be widespread soon if ever. The real world is difficult to handle and humans are good at handling complex tasks.

I clicked through to their map which shows active collectives. There’s a ton of them in Europe but I live in the US, so I wanted to see what’s going on in North America. Unfortunately there is just one in Quebec, one in British Columbia, and two down in Mexico City.

Since I live in the Pacific Northwest I clicked on the one in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I watched their promotional video and was impressed. It would be great to get something started in my area. Unfortunately the US is very antagonistic to these types of organizations.

I fully agree. How do we get more coops in the US? Not just business / industry coops like this one, but also worker, consumer and other coop types? I think this is one of the best paths available right now to building a better alternative to capitalism

Exactly 😄 That’s part of why I mentioned the Fediverse bit, they’d fit in perfectly over here
