Hyundai Rotem has unveiled a roadmap to develop a fully autonomous hydrogen electric tram capable of operating through city centers without a driver by 2031. At InnoTrans 2026, the world’s largest railway trade fair held in Berlin, the company demonstrated an AI-based blueprint covering dispatch, operations, and maintenance alongside scale-model simulations. Building on its in-house Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for rail vehicles completed this year, Hyundai Rotem is now developing control center integration technology. The autonomous rail vehicle market is projected to grow from $9.84 billion in 2025 to $21.67 billion by 2034. Hyundai Rotem aims to differentiate itself from competitors like Alstom and Siemens by combining hydrogen energy with autonomous driving, and also unveiled a next-generation high-speed rail concept model at the event.
Having to refuel trams, that’s what we need.
I love it. You could have trams where there’s no infrastructure!
Oh wait, what’s that, trams need infrastructure anyway? Hmmmmm but that would make this whole project worse than useless
jup, thats a really bad idea…
