The big surprise at this point would be if he betrays corporate interests to help average Canadians.

Canadian companies operating in foreign countries should be complying with foreign country laws and regulations while in those foreign countries. They should be subject to the same complaint process in those foreign countries as other companies in those foreign countries. If “Canada” doesn’t like that a foreign country allows for human rights violations on the regular, then Canada should take action at a federal level to clip trade – sorta like how we don’t have a whole lot of trade with North Korea.
Setting up a special ombudsperson to take complaints related to Canadian companies operating in foreign jurisdictions seems like the sort of government optics posturing that Trudeau was famous for – an office with a wobbly mandate, little realistic authority regarding corporate activities in foreign jurisdictions, but a great virtue signalling puff piece.
Even more, you can look up their annual reports online still, and they seem really janky. Govt was paying 20 people about $3.5million per year to handle… 5 complaints in 2021, 80 inquiries. They did like 12 presentations too, a quarter of which were at a local Ottawa university of marginal note – not at universities that focus on the industries the office intended to oversee. They were more concerned with going on an eco-podcast to signal those virtues!
Realistically, in order to meet its implied mandate, it would’ve needed a huge boost in funding / staffing, and additional legislated powers/authority over the sectors it targeted - mining, oil/gas, garments. The amount of extra funding they’d need, would likely be impossible to justify, especially given the lackluster number of complaints/reports. I’m ok seeing this govt office go away.
Is this new? Because he keeps doing this. I am never more ashamed of voting for this asswipe. Pierre would have been incompetent and made a fool of himself and the process at least.
And sold Canada out to the US. Carney is decent for foreign affairs, while his domestic politics are grotesquely neoliberal and hyper corporatist.
I would rather fight our own issues internally, versus let our country fall apart due to US mechanations.
I think Carney is creating lots of space for the rise of the NDP for instance, while Poilievre would have handed away our sovereignty.
We need both. I helped in the Avi Lewis campaign and I want to help get NDP people elected. They have no one in my riding currently, but I will vote in next election to the post progressive I can find.
