Before people start piling on with the “I’d never sit in economy for that long!”, realize that Quantas is marketing this specifically as a premium product to reduce the amount of time to connect locations. They’re actually shrinking the total number of economy seats as most of the revenue will come from Business followed by Premium Economy. Those passengers will be fine in their seats for nearly 24 hours.
The only ones who will do it in economy will be people looking to experience “the world’s longest”, or people who absolutely hate multi-stop trips.
As far as i know they had to reduce the seats to reduce cargo weight, and increase fuel tank capacity. Therefore the remaining seats have more space.
If the plane would be loaded up to max seat capacity it would use to much fuel and could not cover the range.
I hate layovers when it’s less than 8 hours of flight. But I feel that 8 hours is kinda the max before I NEED a layover, just so I can be human for a bit. After 8 hours I make no guarantees as to when cabin fever will set in.
There is also a war going on right now in the middle east and using Dubai or Doha as transit hub might simply not be possible at all times. There are not that many transit hubs available to cover for those in the middle east, so airlines trying out direct routes makes sense

And that’s alright. You’re not their target demographic then as this product isn’t everything for everyone. There are still routes through the Middle East with layovers.
To be fair I wouldn’t like two hours in first class so I’m not the target demographic for airlines in general.

Everything is marketed as a premium product these days, they’re not unique. As the working classes run out of money, companies double-down on only caring about the ultra-wealthy. Which doesn’t even matter in this instance, because I would avoid 24 hours on a plane, no matter how luxurious…
Currently the longest commercial non-stop flight is 18 h from New York to Singapur.

I flown the nonstop 10 hour flight from usa to Europe. There’s a reason these flights are cheaper than one with a stop. Even in first class no one wants to be stuck in a chair for that long. Not even talking about their shitty economy plus.
They generally are not. I would know, I fly routes to Europe quite often, mostly business. Cheapest ones almost always involve transiting through major hubs, e.g. Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, NYC. In fact, flying direct from any of these hubs is usually more expensive than flying from a secondary airport and then doing a layover in any of the aforementioned hubs.

Gotta disagree there. Ended up on a 16h flight from HKG to LAX in Business (due to a headwind) and I didn’t mind it at all. Honestly I prefer direct flights where possible. No need to worry about 2nd leg delays, getting and rechecking bags, going through the airport, blah, blah. This is something I’m looking forward too, and obviously I’m not alone if they’re investing millions in it.

I mean, maybe a shill for international travel and exploring the world, but not for a single company. This just seems like a unique offering. Kinda like Emirates “The Residence” or Americans new A321XLRs. Also Singapores airport, etc.
