• Elden Ring.

I get it, it’s good and all. It just bores me to death. I tried several soulslike games and never managed to like one. The combat system in particular seems absurdly stiff and slow.

Their commitment to keeping the difficulty high is what keeps me away. I’m lucky to find a few hours a week to play games these days. I can’t devote a ton of time to fighting the same boss over an over 30 times.

I do like Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor. They’re essentially Souls Soulslike, but with a difficulty slider, so I can have fun exploring, pretending to be a Jedi, and enjoying the story without having to be perfect at the game.

      • Right? I don’t have 5 hours a day to play videogames. Keeping the difficulty so high by simply making the combat annoyingly archaic doesn’t make the game fun, but frustrating.

And with the amount of games in the world, I can play anything else that respects my free time.

PS: The elitist toxic userbase that solves everything with a “skill issue” and doesn’t want the games to be easier so other people can approach them doesn’t certainly help either.

It’s not a game about just mashing buttons, it’s about timing, learning the enemies, their attacks and patterns. You also need to read item descriptions to learn the lore and their strengths and weaknesses.

Not every genre is for everyone, if you want mindless button pressing, a game doesn’t need to change its entire premise to suit a few people, sorry. Such a shitty take. It’s like asking rom coms to remove the romance because you don’t enjoy it, okay move on and stop complaining, it’s just not for you.

          • reads a comment where the OC is saying that the userbase is toxic because solves anything with a “skill issue” and don’t want the games to be accessible to everyone

proceeds to say that it’s a skill issue and that the games shouldn’t be accessible to everyone

The issue of skill never came up in my comment lol. And it’s not about accessibility, it’s about the genre itself.

              • You don’t need to keep proving my point about the elitist toxic userbase. It’s ok, i don’t want to play your beloved game.

Where was I toxic towards you? I rationally explained why they shouldn’t just appease every single person, and you went off the rails.

Your the toxicity in the gaming space, wanting everything your way, even though there’s not a single thing on this planet that everyone will agree on.

But it really isn’t. Games like Fallen Order have shown that you can have easier difficulty options without sacrificing the experience for those who want a game that demands perfection. Unless, of course, you derive your satisfaction from gatekeeping most of the game to many players just because they don’t have the time to devote to fighting the same boss 43 times in a row.

The issue with many adults with adult responsibilities is that while we have the disposable income required to flatly games, we do not have a great deal of time to devote to perfecting a game.

I used to love difficult games. Now I want something I can enjoy an hour or two a week, with the rare 3-hour session every few weekends. With the difficulty of games like Dark Souls and Elden Ring, that will make a single game take years to complete.

No, it’s like wanting all racing games to have an auto steer mode, not every single game need to pander to everyone.

Unless, of course, you derive your satisfaction from gatekeeping most of the game to many players just because they don’t have the time to devote to fighting the same boss 43 times in a row.

Or… people understand that not every single game needs to pander to the widest possible audience……

Stuff isn’t free to add, and games are costly enough, if you want it, then maybe it should be a paid DLC option, would you pay for an easier mode?

If you haven’t played any of them, start with Dark Souls 1. It was released before the difficulty inflation had kicked in and you can really tell in the bosses. The areas themselves are still very challenging to traverse, but not really in a reflex-testing twitch gameplay kind of way.

Dark Souls 1 is also very approachable by several classes that let you reduce risk and reduce reliance on dodge rolls. Magic is very powerful and comparably safe, and heavy armor is a viable build in DS1 to use Poise to avoid getting hit stunned and just tank the damage with healing flasks.

Shields are also good and viable and you can deal with a lot - even most I think - of boss attacks by having a shield up instead of relying on dodging.

Of all the FromSoft games it should be the most approachable.

Sekiro 😂 I just can’t deal with anyone caling it the best action game of all time… like sure, if the only other action you played was Dark Souls or something. It’s by far the most limited action game I have played from any Japanese developer… even the most advanced gameplay is “hit hit hit… dodge/parry parry parry… hit hit hit” like FFS I can juggle nearly all enemies in action games that came out two decades ago, why would I bother with this boring combat.

Ghost of Tsushima. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad game. It’s perfectly fine. The combat is solid, it’s very pretty and it’s optimised to perfection - ran like a dream on my old fat first gen PS4.

That being said it’s still largely just a Ubisoft game at the end of the day, complete with their signature style lifeless point of interest/collect-a-thon open world.

The story is fine, but is constructed in a way that seems like it should be adapting to your choices while in actuality it doesn’t - especially noticeable if you play as the most honourable samurai in history and refuse to touch the “Ghost” stuff. It’s also way too long for what it is, and is too unvaried in tone. The stoic, dour and unaffected monotone grinds you down over the course of the 60 hour campaign when literally the only reprieve from it is 15 total minutes of Kenji screentime. And it’s not broken up by gameplay either - while the combat remains fresh and fun the quest design is extremely uninspired, mostly terrible and highly repetitive.

It’s a fine game and if you can get it on a half off sale or more you’ll have some fun with it but to hear people call it “Game of the Decade” is frankly bizarre to me.

People seem to adore Grand Theft Auto, but I just find it entirely unappealing.
