Back in the smoking days, they’d say blowing smoke in someone’s face is code for you wanna do it right now. We used to talk about it at parties. None of us understood who it was code for. Probably swingers before us punkers in the 80s. Anytime you did it on accident, people would crack jokes like hey now you gotta go screw your buddy Steve or your sister or whatever. Kind of like accidentally giving someone a green m+m.
I remember that being a thing back in the 60s - it was supposed to be super sexy. Of course it was anything but. We all smelled of stale smoke back then though. Our parents all smoked (my dad didn’t, but he was an outlier); there were ashtrays everywhere, including in cars and planes; you bought cigarettes by the carton and the brand defined you. I started smoking at 15 or 16. Totally normal.
Different times I guess. Hard for me to imagine anything less sexy than getting, or for that matter giving, a snoot full of cigarette smoke at close range.
Maybe it’s something that makes sense if you’re a smoker?
The past is stranger than I am even capable of imagining.
The decline of this practice and the recognition of the harmful effects of tobacco led to the figure of speech “blowing smoke up one’s ass”, which means lying to someone to flatter them.

It seems really rude.

Just saw Carrie Bradshaw swallow Mr. Big’s smoke ring after their cheating sex.
They probably saw it in some old movie.
Odd, because blowing smoke up someone’s ass is somehow much more G-rated.
Blowing smoke up someone’s ass is a way to stop them from drowning. Or it was.
