I don’t understand why Google is doing this - showing its own (AI) summaries instead of directing searchers to the website. It’s so obvious that they are shooting themselves in the foot.
Little tidbit:
USA Today isn’t the only publisher considering blocking Google. According to the Journal, Reddit is reevaluating its $60 million per year deal with Google after seeing traffic declines
Um, I don’t think reddit’s decline can be blamed solely on Google…
Now those Sites need to add an AI Firewall to prevent google from scraping from them and eventually we return to an actual functioning WWW.
Or better yet, don’t block them but rather poison their data.
From the linked article:
Time, meanwhile, is trying to monetize the bots by using what the Journal calls “a sort of Trojan horse approach — creating text-based ads that regular readers never see but that AI crawlers might find.” The idea is that AI chatbots might then reference those ads when responding to user queries without knowing they are ads, like some sort of insidious sponsored content.

Does anybody remember Burda’s search engine https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliqz ?
Why haven’t the big publishers developed their own search engine? Google is eating their profits.
Google is eating their profits.
I remember Publisher pressing for a Link/Snippet Tax… mmh doesn’t sound so unreasonable in hindsight.
