Oh so that’s actually just a hop skip & a jump to Mussolini, plus there are active fascist close relatives writing bad histories! As she says this is not just pop culture trivia.
When forming an opinion about her, I’m far less concerned about what her great grandparents did and more concerned about what she’s done. Are you going to criticize her on her actions, or an accident of birth?
I like her comment that Swift is superfluous to the story and being used only as a gateway to a history lesson, which she objectively does well to explain.
She could mean that. Or she could mean that this isn’t some pop culture trivia about Swift, but that this is something significant about her. The way she talks, to me it feels like it’s more the latter.
I’m not going to criticize her for what her grandparents did either, but the accident of birth is why she is where she is. Her father made a sizable investment (hundreds of thousands of dollars) in the record label she signed with, and the family moved down to Nashville to start her career.
Not something I could have done for my kids, and there is apparently no evidence to substantiate the rumor that her father bought tens of thousands of copies of her first record to make it a success.
And that’s absolutely fair. She had far more opportunities than my kids due to the results of her predecessor’s actions, but her living in a hut in the wilderness wouldn’t have changed what they did, either. At least she appears to be trying to make the world a better place for marginalized people, although I respect Greta Thunberg’s commitment to her beliefs more.
