“The thing that the religious right did over and over and over again – they do it today; JD Vance is actually exceptionally good at this – is this idea that, ‘ You expressing your point of view oppresses me, you enjoying your civil rights oppresses me. Even though I’m the second most powerful man in the country, other people having their point of view is actually oppression against me.’ They were exceptionally good at that…”
This is not anything new or US specific for heavens’ sakes. Socrates was sentenced to death in ancient Greece for “corrupting the minds of youth”, “failing to acknowledge the gods of the city”, and “introducing new deities”.
It never stops.
Fair point. Thank you.
Even though I’m the second most powerful man in the country,
lol the fuck you are JD
That’s what he says when he’s trying to flirt with the couch
“You know, a man of my power could have any couch, but I chose you.”, lol
Tbh this has creepy boss vibes now that I think about it, but that’s this whole admin
“I wanted to reclaim free expression as a leftwing value, because I was seeing more and more of my friends grow sceptical of the value of free expression. Which I think is an understandable reaction to how dire everything was and continues to be since 2020.”
Nice
This is maybe one of the worst aspects of the Obama presidency, how it gave rise to this notion that people have a right to be free from offense. Most people honestly think their opinions and identity are sacrosanct, and that it’s their right to never have to cope with hearing anything they don’t like.
And I really, really wish I knew how to make people care about anything that really matters so much as they care about this symbolic, stupid shit.
