Yesterday it kinda hit me that the feed left a lot more “reddit-y” suddenly. More american politics for one.
There is a also aspecific thing that alerted me: Sudden appearance of this pattern plagueing reddit where a post about some bad muslim person escalates into edgy atheism which is also kinda racist and lowkey fascist in a very specific way.
I don’t have a lot of empiric evidence, just the vibe seems to have shifted.
100% of the users here are reddit refugees. I don’t know why anyone would assume the vibe of the platform to be any different. In many ways this place even manages to out-reddit reddit.
Its a very narrow dpgraphic of reddit users though, of course it’s going to be different, not necessarily better.
I’ve noticed a lot more right-wing “just asking questions!” type comments lately but chalk it up to there being an election this year and the right spreading their plague around social media.
The redditification I see is where people spam 100s of the lowest quality posts across the entire site to push an agenda. Also the comments are all same because no one actually engages with the article and just post a reactionary comment to the headline. I dont know if its because the articles are so low quality there is nothing to engage with, no one cares enough to read the article or everyone is so ideologically aligned the response is the same.
yeah you can block these people at least, but holy crap do they flood the zone.
and if you do engage with them or criticize them, you’re ‘the enemy’. and no they aren’t rage-baiting, they are ‘showing people the truth of the evils of the bad people in the world’. and if you aren’t miserable, angry, and dumb like they are, you are the problem.

I think this has even gotten worse over the last year. It’s amazing how often I see people arguing with each other over what they interpreted through the headline. Neither realizing that not only does the article completely explain whatever they’re arguing about, but they miss key details about the topic because they wouldn’t make the effort to read.

Lots of garbage blog spam here. Often not factual. And then yeah, everyone circle jerks under it as if anything productive is happening.
I wish we had better sources, more people willing to read and not immediately become adversarial with replies. Same problems we had with Reddit.
I’ve seen more pedantic bad-faith comments recently. I don’t know if there are more, or if I’m just more aware of them.
there are. it’s angry weirdos who want to flood lemmy with their miserable stupid views.
a few of them have multiple accounts on multiple instances so they can spam their crappy posts and comments.
several people on my block list, are the same username at different instances, and with the same post histories.
and they are super hostile if you call them out, and will report you for ‘harassment’. Meanwhile they are harassing the fediverse pushing their ‘truth’. Usually some flavor of doomerism about how every thing is always awful and this is the worst time to be alive ever. and if you try to counterpoint them, especially with evidence, they will insult, threaten you, and report you for harassment.
it’s interesting, because yeah there are other users who post less, whose comments/posts are far more diverse in content, tone, and communities, but well you won’t notice them as much because they aren’t making 100s of comments and dozens of posts a day, repeating the same miserable talking points ad nauseam, usually in one liners where they harass and insult anyone they perceive as a threat to their views.
Block posters, communities, and keywords. And if you want to combat the perceived Reddit content, be the change and post what you think would counter it.
I came back here after a long time and i had the same feeling. I think has more to do with the level of the discussion at large nowadays, more than the platform itself.
oh, sorry you mean insulting, harassing, and threatening other users when the counterpoint your comments isn’t a ‘high level’ of discussion?
People are people. My interactions on here have been largely the same as on Reddit, and on Reddit largely the same as on forums before that. Lemmy was and still is niche, so only a specific subset of people would’ve interacted here. That changes as more and more people arrive here.
Yup, but you can always decamp to other instances and other places. Once you’ve made the transition from Reddit to Lemmy, there’s much less friction transiting to your next watering hole.
I agree that people seem to be the same everywhere; the problem with reddit is that there get to be SO many people there that
a) moderation suffers b) you need upvotes in order to be VISIBLE–this has some nasty knock-on effects.

All the smarmy boasting about the superiority of the lemmy style and its users is, as far as I can tell, mostly masturbation. It is better than reddit solely because it is less populated, because I can write a comment on a day old post and still get replies for a week, because I have to be careful not to be to total and complete of a flaming asshole because it wouldn’t take many people putting me on their blocklist to make me invisible, etc…
People are people.
A lower percentage of them are people on Reddit and unfortunately that percentage is dropping here also. (We have bots posting weird questions to the question communities for example)
Reddit is a decent measure of people on the Internet in general. At least, Western people. Asia has its own forums.
Reddit has abdorbed some of the most technical and the most stupid people there are. The most kind abd the most fascist. It’s a statistical inevitability for a jack-of-all-trades platform.
Sure, but I was referring to the “people” (user accounts) that literally are not people (human) because they are software instead.
I came from reddit 2 or 3 years ago now and i think most others are the same. Idk about all of a sudden. Its had the same undertones for a while now if you ask me and i think it grows along with the more people that join. As for politics I got tired of that the year before the last election. I invested some time into filters with certain words. Some stuff still slips by, but i am fine with seeing a few things.
Personally I can’t wait for more of that, the one thing this place lacks is the smaller unique communities that bring a lot of great obscure information to the table.

There are probably fewer than 10% of leftists in the West overall, even fewer in America, and for anyone outside of the West being a “leftist” just means having a modicum of humanity and caring about justice. Any Anglo site will inevitably be filled with average Anglos, and the average Anglo man is, well, you know. Just be happy they’re not a majority here, not yet at least. 🤷♂️

I saw one a few days ago from some alleged young woman/possibly teenager talking about how she’s into talking to old men online and if it was wrong to block a guy who’d demanded to see a photo of her full ID after she sent a pic of it with her information covered up.
I have come to expect politics with debates against propensities as they come up on these (or any) social platforms. Thats just how forums have always been since it was referred to as bulletin boards back in the 90s. Reddit didnt invent that. Thats just human behaviour where people bat these things around and see what they can get away with. and trolls exist everywhere.
The thing that would make a platform reddit-y flavoured would be if it sold out to a large corporation, replaced mods with bots and celebrate a bunch of wife beating/federation/minority hunting subs and banned you for not liking it. That flavour is so very specific to reddit it’s considered a lesson in dark social experiments.
If I see anything resembling politics I block it, immediately.

Disengaging from politics on one social media platform does not mean a person doesn’t pay attention or involve themselves in other places.
most of the political nutters here would never engage in politics in the real world in any meaningful way, it would be too inconvenient and it might shake them out of their delusional idealism that they are perfectly correct about things.
Too bad we don’t have that kind of additional data.
It’s alright, you don’t have to run a mathematical analysis on everyone who says they don’t like seeing political posts in their feed.

Neither. It’s the way that is used in some subreddits to propagate fascistic ideas in a veil of common sense and atheism. I am seeing a pattern of escalation beyonf what was resonable from.the original post
