Well, the full story is a bit more complicated.

Vitaly killed a guy he misguidedly held responsible for the death of his family.

It would have been a story about the futility of revenge if not for what happened after when Vitaly returned home.

Why innocent? The wikipedia and google don’t say anything about that. The Nielsen guy killed his wife and kid in midair collision.

Seems like he went easy on the guy responsible for killing his family. An eye for an eye would have been to take his wife and children from him and let him live.

Therapy doesn’t help as much as you think in hard cases like this. Some people don’t believe it helps at all.
