    I saw a response to this which explained that it was probably in part to the Irish potato famine, where people were being genocided with starvation so the people who survived more were ones that were more inclined to store fat

      This is common in a lot of island and desert populations, where their ancestors had to store fat to survive multiple famines and shortages. Modern diets are terrible and all, but like most things in life, there are a variety of factors at play here.

      Finding the right number of calories is difficult - but for some folks, genetically, that number is way lower than others.
