MOUNTAINAIR, N.M. (KRQE) – Investigators are still looking into the mysterious substance at a central New Mexico home that killed three people and sickened at least 18 first responders in the small town of Mountainair. While many are recovering, the wait for answers continues.
While carbon monoxide and natural gas have been ruled out, New Mexico State Police is continuing to investigate the substance at the center of the deadly event. Mayor Nieto said that he’s been assured that no one else is in danger. “We don’t know at this point; it could be narcotics, it could be fentanyl, it could be different chemicals. We don’t know at this point, that’s why it was sent to the lab for testing,” said Mayor Nieto.

Within minutes, a dispatcher is heard saying there were three people at the home and two might not be breathing. Then came a call for naloxone, the opioid-overdose antidote.
One person was revived using naloxone, which only reverses overdoses in people who have opiates in their systems, Torrance County Undersheriff Stephanie Reynolds said.
