No one likes higher taxes. But New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan to tax wealthy residents’ second homes has elicited a highly emotional response from two of the city’s richest.
You know, it’s tricky. I get called rich on the Internet, based on my position and salary. But I don’t feel rich. I don’t own my own home and I doubt I ever will. I rarely take vacations,I don’t eat out - too expensive. I don’t go to the pub with my friends anymore, can’t afford it.
It’s totally relative. My husband and I together in Germany earn about half of what I used to earn alone in the US (we’re a student and an apprentice, so we earn especially little). I’m still significantly more prepared for emergency costs now than I used to be, because the total rent for my apartment is about half what I used to pay, and I no longer have significant health/health insurance or vehicle costs.
