I’ve worked with the various components before but not specifically this. Going to install it in a jail and see what it looks like.
Looks really great, but I wonder how well it handles spam. That is one of the biggest issues with hosting your own server.
There are also several factors most people are not aware will be an issue
- Reputation of whatever IP, or entire subnet, you will run your server. If some spammer had the IP in the past you could literally start off with a bad IP
- Even if you start out with a good IP, if your provider is lax with their management of reported spam you could still be impacted if the provider IPs get blacklisted
Overall for anyone considering hosting their own email I think the two things to consider, and worry, are likely
- Mail delivery
- Handling spam
There are affordable mail providers, so I would only recommend hosting email as a learning experience or if you will have, potentially substantial amounts of time, to deal with issues. In my opinion, for most people it is better to pay for mail than to host your own.
I will say thus far, there’s been some minor issues with the install. They’re documentation for installing in a jail is based upon ezjail which doesn’t seem to have been updated in years. Secondly, I’ve found that I’ve had less install issues using a thick jail within cloned ports and source. Finally, install has been much slower than expected as it’s installing from source. I plan to see it through to the end to test management, but will likely be testing other options. Likely nextcloud or Sogo directly.

My understanding is that ezjail has not been mainted for years so they likely are not maintaining or looking at FreeBSD compatibility. Highly suggest you ping them and ask if they are still supporting FreeBSD.
The install from source is just too slow imo. Going to tackle again, but install sogo and dependencies directly. I’ll lose the nice admin panel that attracted me to iredmail, but I suspect this will work better overall.
