    Is there any precedent for a territory of a country deciding to align with another nation? I’m just interested as to what the process would be, surely they can’t just unilaterally decide they’re no longer part of the UK.

      Depending on your ideology, nobody can stop them. And more to the point, is that not what Scotland has been threatening to do for some time now?

        Well I think the Dutch would love to welcome Scotland as a constituent country (or something) of the Kingdom of The Netherlands!

        What they cannot do, however, is just declare themselves part of Norway. As a Norwegian, though, I hope we’d take them.

          Well, they can, it just comes with the embarrassing risk of Norway rejecting that claim. You’d hope they’d not take that route.
