Not that unusual, really. Regardless of whether you agree with that law or not, it prohibits certain devices completely. Whether you choose to comply via some collection process or use some other method of disposing of or rendering the device non-functional is up to you.

Laws that disadvantage certain people always suck for them. And not all laws are obeyed.

FWIW I have always been ambivalent on this topic, but the increasing frequency of mis-use of such weapons is starting to become quite troubling for me.

I respect your opinion on this topic however, I’m going to focus on this paragraph here:

FWIW I have always been ambivalent on this topic, but the increasing frequency of mis-use of such weapons is starting to become quite troubling for me.

I hope it’s okay to assume you’re not well versed in licensed firearm ownership in Canada, the only incident that I can think of and that is relatively recent is this here, now you may take this with a grain of salt because I’m about to link a Reddit post but if you read a bit into the comments you can see other licensed firearm owners praising his arrest, Here is the post I’m referring to.

Majority of incidents involving firearms in our country usually don’t stem from PAL holders, me and few other people on Lemmy can attest to that (and if you want actual statistics I can gladly link them), I know my words aren’t much to sway your opinion but what I would suggest to you is taking the CFSC not to become a licensed firearm owner but to see the responsibility we must take when possessing firearms.

      Bit of a personal story:

I make these posts on /c/ca_firearms_rights because firearm’s are a hobby for me, I grew up with absolutely no interest in owning guns until I met my co-workers who took me to the firing range one day and safely showed me how to use a gun and ever since then I’ve been hooked, I take the knowledge that I’ve learned and I want to pass it to others who were like young-me, never had the interest until it was actually presented to them.
