Very early on they were unarmed, and would actually wave to each other.
A noble wouldn’t engage in such uncouth behavior as shooting another noble without a challenge to a duel first.

That was later too! In fact, some of the earliest ‘bomb’ dropping was by hand.
The first planes up in the sky in WW1 were largely for recon. Figuring out enemy movements, troop distributions, artillery positions, etc.
