I wish Revolt was federated, so we’d have a(n almost) one-to-one drop-in replacement.
Matrix has group chats and spaces, but there’s apparently still issues with moderation, the bridging tech isn’t reliable, but I haven’t seen anyone successfully use it for voice chat, let alone video.
Mumble is apparently better at voice chat but then you have to also get everyone on the same chat app.
Discord hasn’t enshittified enough for people to be willing to switch to less convenient alternatives, and based on how many people still use Twitter, it’s going to take a lot.
Federation is extremely important for discord alts. If you can’t use one account for all or most servers your discord copy is doomed to fail from the getgo.
Matrix mod tools are third party community run check out daupnir. The bridges are pretty good though the lack of stability is kinda inevitable due to the bridge APIs needing change but it’s not the worst just a pain. Voice and video needs a turnserver for reliability. But it needs work NGL.
Mumble is great but needs a decent phone app.
