Summary
A new YouGov poll reveals widespread disapproval of President Trump’s recent tariff policies, with 51% of Americans viewing them as “the largest peacetime tax hike in U.S. history.”
The survey shows 50% disapprove of Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariffs announced April 2nd, which imposed a baseline 10% levy on all imports with additional tariffs on specific countries.
Trump escalated tensions by threatening China with 50% additional tariffs if they don’t withdraw their retaliatory measures.
Even Ted Cruz expressed concern, calling tariffs “a tax on consumers.”
In other words, half of the US population approves. There is no widespread disapproval nor disastrous whatever, lol.
Not quite,
Overall, 50 percent of those polled said they disapprove of “recent tariffs announced by Donald Trump,” split between 39 percent for “strongly disapprove” and 11 percent for “somewhat disapprove.” By contrast 39 percent said they approve, of which 21 percent did so “strongly” while 18 percent did so “somewhat.”
It is still disappointing that 39% will align with Trump despite all of this, but keep in mind that there’s a floor to Trump’s support numbers. We’ll never be able to approach all of them.
Let’s see what happens on the undecideds over the next few months as the impact of Trump’s tariffs hit. Heck, keep an eye on that 18% “Somewhat Approve”. That’s got to make some of the GQP reps a bit nervous!
Every poll shows the same thing: there is no line for roughly 1/3 the population. Trump could come out tomorrow and say Hitler rocks and 1/3 of the country would approve strongly.
Trump could force them to get bottom surgery and they would still support.
I haven’t heard anyone say “Something Rocks” in a very long time. Would you mind giving me a roundabout age and rough geographical ara for yourself (not for the kicking in of doors at 3am dissenter roundup squad, no, just to know where there is a guy who still says “rocks” )
Lol ok I’m 30 in Virginia. I just use antiquated slang from time to time 🤣
thats fresh
It’s pretty groovy baby.
Streets ahead
Guarantee you that would get him more support
Bro I don’t want to find out.
Lets see this poll in 4-6 weeks, when everything in Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy, etc. has doubled in price. Things may go up even more, because these sociopathic corporations are going to figure that as long as we are jacking up the prices, lets jack them up a little more, and pad the profit. The customers are already going to be feeling pain, what’s a little more?
At the end of the year, my bet is that all those companies will report record annual profits.
It’s still a depressingly weak reaction.
Actually, according to the article, 39% disapproved. It doesn’t specify about the other 11%. I assume that they were unable to pry their heads out of their own asses long enough to offer an opinion.
Your point stands, however. It is absolutely astonishing to me that only half of the respondents disapprove of Trump’s mayhem. I have to wonder if the poll wasn’t phrased so as to confuse the respondents so that the pollsters could intentionally interpret it in Trump’s favor.
50%? So no change. The trump cultists stay brainwashed
He could shoot the economy on 5th avenue and not lose any supporters.
The effects of the tariffs haven’t hit most people yet. People with a 401(k) or who otherwise own stocks obviously know but that’s not necessarily immediate pain. I’m guessing if there’s no reversal in policy, late summer and early fall is when the shit is really going to become real for a lot of people.
Major companies have stocked up on inventory. Those inventories will slowly dwindle and prices will slowly rise. But a lot of consumer-facing companies launch new products in late summer (for back-to-school spending) or early fall (for Christmas spending). It’ll be completely undeniable when even Walmart doubles prices.
Nearly 90 million people didn’t vote in the 2024 USA election. If you don’t want to become an American, don’t act like one.

Those survey results look like the election results.
The GOP won’t actually feel the burn until the low information voters start getting laid off and start laying evening higher prices in stores. It’s too early for that to happen, but it will happen if Trump stays the course.
Reich wing media doing its job too well… There is a rock solid bottom that Trump can literally never drop below…
“I could shoot someone on 5th avenue and not lose supporters”
Probably the only true thing Trump has ever said…
Again, polls don’t matter to a budding fascist dictator and party.
This is far from “widepread disapproval”. This is about the same distribution that brought that loony into the White House - about half the population.
If 51% disapprove, 49% are still too dumb or numb. We need more, much more pain to fix that.
We need more, much more pain to fix that.
You need a committed, organized 3-5%.

So what? The election is over for at least another 18 months or 3 1/2 years - if there is another full election. Doesn’t matter now that Trump already had their vote and won. 99.9% can disapprove and nothing will change.
Presidents have been impeached. And, know what? The people ARE the government. Don’t forget that!
99.9% can disapprove and nothing will change.
Nothing will change because of a poll. A lot can change if people organize, get out in the streets and take direct action.
Polling doesn’t matter if he doesn’t plan on leaving office.
Polls don’t matter to Trump. Only power matters.
Opinion polls don’t matter at all, because Republicans are just that fucking stupid.
I cant stop saying it:
WE TOLD YOU SO AMERICANS!
Amazing, it took this long to figure out what a tariff is.
Right?!
The last poll that mattered was in November.
Trump doesn’t care, he doesn’t have to face another election again. Oh, he’s still planning on being President for the rest of his life, but not planning on having to win another election to do it…
Let’s hope voting still matters.
