I am on a goody two-shoes run of the game, so no stealing whenever possible (currently 2 items stolen, total 50 groschen, not bad eh?). I figured that I couldn’t do the Absolver quest, because none of the guides gave any other option but to steal the sword (and then choose who to give the replica to). But still, I wanted to try something. In stead of actually stealing the sword, I thought I’d look for the poor dude who owns it. And when I finally found him, I was pleasantly surprised!

You can actually tell Basan that Thomas wants to steal his sword and it ends up with Basan attacking him in the middle of the camp. I was sad when Basan ended up dying, so I reloaded, but the next time Thomas was the one who bit it. So the duel isn’t even scripted in anyone’s favor!

Anyway, figured I’d make this post, because none of the guides showed this option and maybe someone else wants to do a good run.

Don’t follow guides. They seem to be written by people want the absolute fastest way to accomplish the task.

I found a new way to do the hunger quest in my goodie too shoes run too. I’m thinking there might be a bunch of extra ways to do quests if you just ask random people things during the quest.

    Edit:

and then choose who to give the replica to

Just an FYI in case people didn’t know. Absolver can be crafted at Henry quality and is better than pretty much all longswords until you reforge Henry’s sword. If you keep the replica (lie and say you put it back in the chest) and give the original to Thomas shenanigans will ensue.

Oh yeah, I don’t usually follow guides, but this time I kinda looked up all the quests involving stealing and tried to see if some really are impossible without stealing. Just to save myself some time. Didn’t really help much though, you seem to be right. Guides don’t seem to be complete.

Oh, I also found out that you can get the Lute without stealing!

Edit: I’m just really hoping you can get the guild sword without stealing (though I doubt it, those guys -especially the butcher- hate your guts, so they won’t give it you, right?), because the tournament was bugged my previous run and I was hoping I could try it again. But if you can’t get the sword, there won’t be a tournament, I’m guessing?

Yo, how do you get the lute without stealing? That’s one i couldn’t figure on my goody run. That and Vejmola’s Fine Boots which are my favorite boots.

As for the guild sword i couldnt find a way. I’m trying a new run without killing so maybe ill find one this time. The tournament is still broken-ish though. You have to be very careful to not soft lock it. But the reward for winning it a second time is worth it.

Yeah, the guild sword is impossible to get without stealing. I did find out that you can go to Master Nicholas and tell him about Menhard’s plans, but he won’t even believe you because he knows Menhard is honourable and wouldn’t do something like that. Afterwards I went to Emmerich and he believes you without issue. You can then make plans with him to lose on purpose during the tournament to hand victory to the Kuttenbergers.

When this happened I thought this was the way to do it without stealing, because Emmerich even gives you the keys to the guild hall, so you can get in there and take the sword. But it was still marked as stealing (probably because you’re not allowed to tell anyone else, because Master Nicholas would be against it on principle). Anyway, I reloaded because I simply cannot finish this quest without stealing.

As for the lute: Well, if you talk to the carpenter he will refuse to sell it to you. But if you ignore him and go straight into the house, you will find his father. The father is a drunk and wants the money for booze. So he will sell it to you for 200 groschen. It took me quite a while to figure this out, because as soon as you walk into the house you’re trespassing (the blue one, not the red one - private area), but just ignore that and talk to him. After you buy it the area won’t be private anymore.

So many quests are full of alternate solutions and it’s impressive how many ways the devs have considered us possibly fucking up these situations. Many of them are full of extra dialogue for seemingly no reason other than “what if the player decides to do something dumb”?
