Do all smart displays have full-scale graphical OS behind them?
Can’t you LFS yourself a super lean “what is my purpose? You play a video file” kind of an OS without installing a desktop environment?
I’m always baffled by digital signs that shows “Let’s get you started with windows 11” instead of the intended output. I thought that with Linux you could just not have the same problems by hacking away every redundant code/programs.
almost always cheaper to buy generic screens and have something output whatever you want to them than buying specialized screen hardware with specific software and requirements to load shit into a system.
as someone who just worked at a company who does digital signage, ultimately boils down to laziness. no one cares to make something good (although I just made a pretty good one, but burnt myself out making it) you’re entirely right though. full desktop makes things way harder to maintain
