I suspect Sunak has picked up on the general “we’re sick of being promised things that never materialise” vibe, and is trying to pander to it with an “honest” response of “you get nothing!” He just lacks the wisdom to realise that’s not going to work. People already know they’re getting nothing. What they want is a government that promises change and then actually delivers it. Johnson let them down by promising everything and giving nothing. Sunak’s not going to win by promising nothing and giving nothing. He’s probably also hoping that something will turn up between now and the general election, which he can point to and claim that he has delivered (under promise, over deliver is a good strategy when it’s achievable).
