NewYork Post not bothering to spell check the name. It’s the Phryges, from Phrygian cap, one of the symbols for liberty. Funnily enough, it also figures on the flag of the New York state.

Arguably, it’s a terrible and freakish looking mascot, but the symbolism is strong.
