ROME, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Footage of police beating pro-Palestinian students drew broad condemnation in Italy on Friday, with the opposition calling for the interior minister to address parliament over the episode. Student marches were blocked by police in the Tuscan cities of Florence and Pisa, with images of officers vigorously using their truncheons on school-age protesters in Pisa triggering outrage on social media and from politicians.

Unfortunately you are right: the Italian government is not a fascist government (this is not the right place to explain my statements), but unfortunately it is a government in which the majority of ministers and deputy ministers extol the fascist ideology and desire employment of fascist methods. There is therefore no surprise at this fascist drift, but it is important that Europe and the whole world are indignant at these drifts, because this is the only way to help millions of numb Italians to emerge from their lethargy.

There is a substantial difference between a fascist government and a government that would like to be one, but which finds itself with a constitution which (Renzi allowing) is difficult to modify, a President of the Republic who (hoping that he survives the legislature) carries out his duties very well role as guarantor of the Constitution and an unprepared, pathetic and incapable ruling class

You’re right, it’s just a lot of nuance for social media. Thanks for taking the time and spelling it out for others.

What is interesting is that the police force is probably mostly the same as it was before the neo-fascists came to power. It’s almost like they just waited to be able to do that with little repercussion.

Far-right people are naturally drawn to police work in every country. Only the law and sometimes a sense of duty stops them from going fully SS.
