A police union source said the student in the northern town of Lens appeared to have picked up a teargas grenade fired by riot police, hoping to fling it back, but the device exploded in his hand.

The grenade exploded after hitting the high schooler, according to his classmates. The justice guy in charge stated officially there were no way to know yet.
The other way around. The main police union is far right, and everything they say should be taken with a grain of salt.
They oppose media freedom, consider judges leftwing partisans who release criminals, have a long history of pushing false narratives to protect cops and/or incite hatred against people of color, pushed for a law that considers any police kill as justified until proven otherwise, they claimed being “at war” against “pests”…
