Summary

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is on trial for allegedly receiving illegal campaign funding from Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi for his 2007 election.

Sarkozy, charged with passive corruption, illegal financing, criminal association, and embezzlement, denies the accusations, calling key evidence “fake.”

This “Libyan case,” first reported in 2011, escalated in 2016 when a businessman claimed to have delivered cash from Libyan officials.

Sarkozy, already convicted in unrelated corruption cases, faces up to 10 years in prison. Eleven others, including ex-ministers, are also on trial.
