  • In theory I like the removal of race-based alignment from the game.

In practice, I hate the way WotC went about doing it, and it was actually one of the reasons I switched away from D&D and to Pathfinder (I bought the Pathfinder core rulebook for Christmas just a few weeks before the OGL thing), because I was sick of how lazy WotC’s development was being.

WotC could have doubled down on the idea that those “evil” races are so not because of the races themselves, but because of the currently-dominant culture among those races. Emphasise outliers like Drizzt, or the complexity of the Many Arrows Tribe. Instead, they ripped away pages full of lore from digital copies of books people had already paid for, with no recompense.

I’m also bitter that they removed one of the most poignant anti-racist messages in the game. They removed the “alignment” section on every race’s stats, but that included this beauty:

Tieflings might not have an innate tendency toward evil, but many of them end up there.

It’s an incredibly powerful commentary on how the way people are treated by others can end up affecting how they behave. How if you always act with suspicion or outright hostility towards someone merely because of how they look, and never give them a fair chance to prove otherwise, they might just end up acting the part. They might not feel they have any other choice.

  • Ok Jack, we get it. Dr van Helsing is a really cool dude. You can stop expositing. I assume this was not unusual for writing in the 19th century, but it feels very “tell, don’t show” today. And makes van Helsing feel like a Gary Stu.

The Stores refers to the Harrod’s department store, according to my physical copy’s endnotes. The Dracula Project says it’s either the Civil Service stores on Queen Victoria Street & Haymarket Street, or the Army-Navy stores on Victoria Street, Westminster. Given who Lucy is, I’m more inclined to believe my paper copy’s interpretation here.

The Dracula Project says that apparently van Helsing was based on a real person. Probably Max Müller. Especially since one “Max Windoeshoeffel” was listen in the dramatis personae in early notes. There have been a number of other candidates put forward.

TDP also tells us that the gangrene incident may have been based on a real event in Stoker’s life. Ellen Terry, an actor at the Lyceum, developed an infection on her thumb while performing Twelfth Night. Stoker’s brother George lanced and treated it, claiming he may have saved her arm by doing so.

  • I don’t mind too much if it starts a light shower while I’m already out running. It can even be nice to be cooled down by it, if it’s a hot day (unlikely, given I’m starting this challenge on the first day of spring). But the feeling of heading out into the rain is absolutely miserable.

And if the rain is heavier than a light shower, even continuing to run is no fun. Needing to squint and constantly wipe my eyes. The gross feeling of wet soggy socks. No thanks.

  • I suspect there are a few reasons the market for cycling is bigger:

    • The importance of being able to see is much higher. Before I got Lasik, I would just take my glasses off when running. I could see well enough to stay on the path and avoid other runners or walkers. Being able to see and react quickly is just more important on the bike.
    • Even normal-sighted cyclists frequently wear glasses for UV/sun protection and as a wind screen.

  • Thanks for sharing. That was really interesting. I really liked the restaurant menu analogy. When I first explored PF2, I was put off by the vancian casting, but it’s really interesting to hear about how actually, PF2 has a much more varied approach with all these other classes (some of which didn’t exist at the time).

The explanation in this video of the Animist actually sounds quite a lot like the D&D 5e warlock, which has long been what I’ve said is the biggest thing missing in Pathfinder. I doubt the Animist is truly going to scratch that same itch, but I’m going to look through the Animist out of interest regardless.

I was a little disappointed that this video didn’t actually discuss the strict vancianism which I expected it to based on the title. But I look forward to watching his next video, since he said that will cover it.
