  • Are you sure about that 3000? I thought at the time it was mostly the 6th year of the rule of some king, emperor or governor (Herod, Augustus or Quirinius, most likely), although the Bible doesn’t even provide those kind of dates.

As far as I’m aware, having a single universal reckoning is something that Christianity invented in the middle ages. But still based on the rule of Jesus as king, of course.

  • I’m a Christian in the Calvinist tradition, but I try to follow Jesus more than Paul. Paul was in my opinion very much a pragmatic who tried to spread Christianity in Greece, and was willing to compromise a bit with Greek sensibilities (which included slavery and misogyny). When in doubt, I look to Jesus instead.

Also, I think Calvin went a bit too far overboard on some things. The reformation was a good thing, but that doesn’t make him right about everything.

  • Yeah, but people with more expensive cars than that are still likely millionaires. I’ve been thinking of buying a boat for years, but that boat would still be a lot smaller than these. (And I still haven’t because it’s not just the purchase, but also maintenance and mooring.)

Although friends of us do have a boat that might be that size. They also live on a houseboat. They don’t have a regular house, and if they have a car, I haven’t seen it.

So I guess middle class people can own a boat like that, but it takes sacrifices in other areas.

  • Does he personally own 10% of Intel now? Or does the US government? From my understanding it’s the government, which makes it a kind of partial nationalisation.

It was absolutely a dirty deal, and Trump and his flunkies are enriching themselves, but I don’t see how Intel is enriching them.

Even so, it smells more of the kind of incestuous business-government relationship you get in fascism than the nationalisation for the people you get in socialism/communism. The US govt now has a special interest in one particular corporation that can be counted upon to do its bidding without a legal framework, while Intel can count on special treatment from the government while still being mostly privately owned.

But that’s not going to stop me from throwing this nationalisation in the faces of anti-socialist Trump supporters. Let them figure out and explain it’s more like fascism than socialism.

  • You’re making a lot of assumptions. All we know is that in the end he was released, so they didn’t actually have any reason to arrest him. Whatever the issue was with how he sat, there was no basis for arrest, and probably no basis to call the police at all.

Maybe he did put his dirty shoes on the seat, but the article doesn’t tell us. Nobody does. All we know is that they wanted to arrest him, but couldn’t. Whatever he did wasn’t serious enough for it and yet they tried and held up a train for it.

It is of course only his side of the story. More info would help. But without more info, there’s no reason not to believe that he was harassed mostly just for being black. It’s not like this is the first time that happened.
