    With the US it also seems that the people that ended up in the hybrid General/President role were all fighting for freedom and the kind of people who were not just bloodthirsty warriors, but people who had enough and picked up arms to defend values they believed in. Washington fought royalty, and thus, did not want to be a King (even when offered), Grant fought against slavery and to keep the united states whole, Ike fought Nazis and was goaded over and over into running for president.

    I do not make any claims good or bad on their political views, actions as president or as generals, but on their strength of character and belief that they defended through war.

    it’s extremely rare that that type of hero can sort their succession plan out properly. Fuck man, sometimes they even bust their asses to get it to work and fail (Atatürk). Also, I am using my once a year or whatever “Don’t @ me Armenians/Greeks/Kurds/etc” card about I don’t want to hear about how he was bad or whatever. Rest of the time, feel free to share your (mostly right) gripes about turks, just not in this comment.

    The US seems to do OK with this somehow (Examples being : George Washington, Grant, Ike.) I don’t even know where to go with whatever the fuck Singapore did with their first first 8 prime ministers (spoilers : It’s just me, Lee Kuan Yew). Just read about the entire fucking democratic history of singapore, with such hits as : We hold regular elections and somehow the PAP always wins.

    EDIT : Side note/summary on Atatürk : he basically ruled through a one party state. He tried to get an opposition party to sit against him, but they kept on being un-secular islamists that would undo his cultural modernisation efforts and drag us into the arab sphere of influence instead of sitting at the table with the more powerful/modern european countries. If you would like to see what would happen if you have a “revolution”, then go headfirst into a multiparty system that involves theocratic parties, feel free to see how well it works out for Egypt. (spoilers : the Muslim brotherhood gave way to the current authoritarian government, and they share members)
