  • So I’ve heard this mentioned by my kid as he complained about the kids in his class, but I never really looked into it.

This is exactly what AI should have been. It should have been a new vector for people to create dumb and ridiculous things, not the brain of our government, not the death of our job market, not a child porn factory, just a neat way to make things that look just a little weird to become the seed of a new genre.

In the early days of stable diffusion, I tried to use it to make a coloring book, using the dumb and inaccurate ways it went about things on purpose to parody the people trying to hide their AI use and the companies that crank out tons and tons of uninspired graphics or stolen work to make money on people wanting to color without thinking. I was going to make a whole series of bad AI coloring books filled with dumb hybrid animals and anothonically fucked up superheros, a curated collection so we could point at the novelty and laugh at the absurdity of a computer making a superhero who’s only power is having a 3rd arm on their crotch. Instead I scrapped the whole thing and deleted the material and program. I had concerns about the child superheros coming out too sexualized and before I could figure out how to stop it, AI became the devil of our time.

So much fun dies to capitalism.

  • Half of the biggest names on YouTube have become millionaires off of the platform and all know each other professionally if not personally. I don’t understand why they complain about the difficulty of dealing with youtube and their incredibly unreliable management when they literally have the money, the popularity, and the business acumin to create their own, far better version of YouTube and take huge swsths of YouTube’s viewership with them.

Mr. Beast may be a predator and a sociopath, but if he did a coutdown and give away for a month advertising his permanentl move to something like Nebula, then ported everything but a single video explaining why, he wouldn’t even need to invest in the business, the subscriptions he’d bring in alone would rocket them into the top slots for streaming.

  • Im very new to circuitry, only getting into it about a month ago as I stumble through rgh3 on a 360, but I’m learning it as quickly as I learn anything with physical and tactile properties.

Soft Circuits made from laminate on copper foil would be easy enough to make anchor points to solder the LED to that can be stitched to fabrics without damaging the circuitry. Using the smaller LEDs he mentioned, braided wires, and a jumper to connect a battery pack, you’d easily be able to wear this basically everywhere.

Get a denim jacket, run the wiring along or even inside of the fold over seam that’s iconic in denim, I don’t know what the coverage of the lights are, but that could be figured out easily, then you just space the lights along each seam. Same for jeans and a hat. Alternative, a mechanics jump suit with hood and go full head to toe. You could even use jumpers by the neck and waist to attach hat and pants to the jacket circuit so you only have to have one battery pack.

Using the DIY soft circuit, you could make every piece of this at home with a laminator, scissors, and sewing kit, but I’d hazard to say a cricket cutter would make it easier. Hit up your nearest craft fair and there’s bound to be a goblin that can do this in a week with a cool jacket from a thrift store.

  • Hey, 3 decade ADHD brain, working in the mental health field for ADHD, with ADHD kid and Autistic spouse. I have a few options that help with this that I can suggest.

For starters, goblin tasking. If it’s important enough to do, drop everything and do it when you think of it. Goblins don’t plan to go cause mischief, they see the chance to do it and seize the moment with no thought about before or after. Do that with your chores.

Second, inconvenience yourself. You can’t forget your wallet and keys when you’re leaving the house if you have to take them out of your shoes to put them on. We have a stool next to the door, if something important needs to go with us, it how’s on the stool and the stool goes in front of the door. Literally can’t leave without acknowledging it. Mop the kitchen before you game? Put the mop and bucket in your chair. Can’t sit without moving it and if you’re moving it you might as well do it.

DOOM bucket. DOOM piles are all those piles of stuff you have, it means Didn’t Organize, Only Moved. Once in a while, I push all the doom piles in a room into a giant bucket or box or laundry basket, then I go through said container and put every single thing in a permanent and appropriate place. If I can’t find that place, I decide if I actually need that thing. Normally I don’t and it goes to trash or donation.

Teamwork. The technical terms are body doubling and mirroring. Have someone hang out with you while you do the thing. They can help do the thing, or just be there to provide a stimulus outside of your head. Mine is my spouse, but you don’t have to make it a relationship thing, before her I had a pact with a budy that lived near by, we’d call each other up when we were struggling to get the thing done.

Off load it on a digital assistant. There’s a program called Home Assistant that lets you run your own local Alexa like bot that doesn’t leave your network. It’s a fun project and a helpful tool all in one, you can make it sound like GladOS from Portal, it even tells jokes. I didn’t have the time to do all the work, but I had planned to offload reminders onto the bot with a variety of variables that of would use to decide when to remind me of things.

Lastly, willpower. None of these work of ypu aren’t invested in doing better. If you imagine it as a wall you have to climb, these are ladders that will make it easier, but you still have to climb. They never get rid of the wall.

I actually factor commute time and gas against my paycheck when job hunting to get a more realistic image of my take home.

Say I’m getting paid 10/hr for full time, 5 days a week at a job that’s 10 miles from home, and my car gets 20mpg in city.

    40hrs*$10=400

    (20mpg/10miles2way trip) 5days = 5 gallons of gas a week.

Gas here is is about $3.80*5days= is $19 that comes out of the 400 we make each week so we actually get $381

    But factoring commute, that’s 40hrs + 10min a day travel time = 41hrs, 40min.

    381/41.667=$9.14/hr

That’s not even considering commute traffic, vehicle maintenance, fluctuating gas prices, out just basic ass income tax. At the end of the day, this job is only paying about $7.15/hr which is less than I’d make walking to a minimum wage job within 5min.

Coincidentally, this is why it’s so hard for rural communities to get out of poverty, at point I was doing 1hr, 43min in commute to a job that paid 10.30/hr 5 days a week. I was barely scraping by and to take any other job was going to net me negative money.

  • I have a pet theory, I’m not a sociologist or anthropologist or historian so I don’t know enough to claim it valid. I feel that Europe did to the world what Dark Souls did to gaming.

Here’s this tiny section of the world, the weather is awful most of the year, the ground is barely fit for food and the only reliably edible plants are just variations of mustard. The wildlife is awful, wolves can drag off grown men, boars take whole parties to hunt, rats will eat and poison an entire grainhouse over night. Every few years a new power rolls in to wreck the place, if it’s not people it’s diseases, if it’s not diseases it’s climate shifts. Everyone lives in shit hovels relying on next to no nutrients, without enough to feed everyone, crammed in together with farm animals and listening to every other member of their family fucking as they’re trying to sleep. And they persist like that for longer than recorded time.

That’s life on the hardest possible difficult for generations. So when they finally scrape together enough to get out of there they find out that every single other civilization was living in literal verdant utopias. They respond the same exact way a diehard Dark souls fan does, everyone else needs to git gud and get learned up because how the fuck are these Stardew players surviving without an 800 page manual on stats? Europeans literally couldn’t comprehend the idea of a forest that gives you unlimited food because all of their forests eat your fucking chicken just to laugh at your suffering. Living without defined boundaries? How do you stop your neighbor from taking all your grain and leaving you to starve to death in the winter? Picking up your whole community to follow buffalo? Are you insane?! There’s probably a group of bandits right over the hill waiting to gut you for everything you own! Put your big hairy cows in a paddock so they aren’t stolen too! Europe had to make use of every square inch of land to survive, they couldnt fathom the idea of so much land that you’ll never need to see another human again without choosing to. And the hording, lifetimes of eating the same dozen plants and never having enough for everyone to be full, winters that kill you if you don’t spend every second farming to survive it. Land so scarce you have to kill for it.

All of this ignores the social aspects of this mindset becoming a political system. Now several hundred years later, we still have to deal with it because generically we’re the equivalent of dogs scarfint down anything they see because they get used to not being fed regularly. Of course they’re going to be vastly over powered and over equipped compared to a world of people playing on a sane and reasonable difficulty level.

  • The reasons provided are the thin veneer of validity to excuse modifying it for my own fun and preference. If I needed a reason not to do it, the knowledge that it will take any amount of time out of my day is enough. I can’t choose to use a different cpu microcode, I can’t choose to live in a nation that isn’t a shithole, I can’t choose to not participate in consumerism, but I can choose to cut open shitty Walmart tools and replace the shitty proprietary metal prongs with something I choose to put there. Just because I can’t choose most things doesn’t means I shouldn’t use and enjoy the choices I can have.

  • Instead of a brand style mount to attach their battery or a converter to connect brand x to brand y, I want to replace the little block with metal prongs with a little block that has a cheap plug I can buy in bulk. Then do the same to the battery with the compatible plug. Like instead of a 3rd thing, just build it into the tool.
