  • Stan Reiz KC, mitigating, told the court Rudakubana had appeared to have been a “normal child” until he reached 13.

Mr Reiz said: "There is no psychiatric evidence before the court that could suggest that a mental disorder contributed to the defendant’s actions.

“However, he did make a transition from a normal, well-disciplined child to someone who was capable of committing acts of such shocking and senseless violence.”

The description of what happened is horrifying and I’d just like to know what happened to him that turned him into someone capable of that.

  • It has come up before, although the instance is gone and I suspect it only lives on in the Internet Archive. I generally stand by the points I make there - different instances could work for people into different things and federation would allow people to adjust their settings to fling out a wider net. So I might be on a regional instance but want to throw my net wider to include furries or uniform dating or sugar daddies or feet. However, you’d need quite a few people signed up to make an instance viable but that also might be where federation comes in, although that might not help if you are a lonely guy in Tokyo looking for a girl who likes cats and the only other person around is someone in Belgium who is looking for a guy who will dress up in an inflatable unicorn outfit.

I also thought that the approach in this study could be useful.

  • Although I can’t match that description to the trailer, IMDb has something similar:

A queen, desperate to find happiness in love, takes a daring step: she sends the powerful and feared witch Gray Alys (Milla Jovovich) to the “Lost Lands” to give her the magical gift of turning into a werewolf. With the mysterious hunter Boyce (Dave Bautista), who supports her in the fight against dark creatures and merciless enemies, Gray Alys roams an eerie and dangerous world. And only she knows that every wish she grants has unimaginable consequences…

So it might be a garbled version of the plot or it gets a lot wilder and weirder.

  • I’d say:

    • Event Horizon - classic
    • Resident Evil 1 - great film, 2 is solid although the rest are a bit samey
    • Mortal Kombat - thoroughly entertaining
    • The Three Musketeers - enjoyed it a lot more than I was expecting to

The bulk of his films are, at worst, fairly entertaining and I don’t regret watching them, with only Pompeii and RE: Retribution being a bit dull. The only film of his I give under 5/10 is Death Race 3.

  • I’m happy to see:

    Best Film: The Substance

Best Actress: Demi Moore for The Substance (she fully committed to the role)

Best Supporting Actor: Kieran Culkin for A Real Pain (superb performance)

Best Director: Coralie Fargeat for The Substance

Best Animation: Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl (not their best outing but any Wallace & Gromit is going to be a top animation in any year)

Cinematography & Costume Design: Nosferatu (it left me a bit cold but it looked amazing)

Best Hair and Makeup: A Better Man (probably the best bit of it), Nosferatu and The Substance

Best Visual Effects: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (glad it didn’t get overlooked because it was earlier in the year, as they did an amazing job), Alien: Romulus being in this category is a joke

Who will win? Going on previous evidence The Brutalist and Wicked will likely steamroller the opposition, which will be a shame (it’ll be Interesting to see which wins more, probably The Brutalist as it is a more serious film, but we’ll see). However, if Kieran Culkin doesn’t walk away with an Oscar it would be a crime. Inside Out 2 has earned the big bucks and should win, Nosferatu and Dune 2 should get quite a few of the technical awards. It’ll be a pity if The Substance doesn’t get anything but such an outrageous film even getting nominated in major categories feels like a win.

I’m off to see The Brutalist in the next week or so, I’ll be in a better position to judge the lie of the land then.
