There are decades where nothing happens and weeks where decades happen.
Lenin said that.
Been feeling like we’re in a decade of decades.
That’s the beauty about being a history buff. Looking through headlines and the amount of historical events that would happen in any given year, and the reality is things have been relatively calm over the last 30 years, and we are just now facing the reality many people have lived through for decades before.
The only thing that is really different about our situation compared to the past would be the climate crisis, and even then, on a smaller scale, dealing with sudden changes in the climate isn’t unheard of. The dustbowl, the mini ice age, the industrial deforestation of Europe and North America and the draining of the Aral sea come to mind at the top of my head, and many countries in the global south have been dealing with the effects of climate change for a long time already. The reason it’s news now is its actually starting to affect people in wealthy countries.
Considering where health, science and safety are now compared to the past, there is still no other point in time I would rather live.
We didn’t start the fire…
But we kept deferring, and now the world is burning.
Twin towers, vaccines, England’s got a new queen
I feel it but also stuff literally happens every day all the time everywhere. Could it be we have more convenient ways to access terrible news all the time because that’s what sells and even though we know it we still do it because we forgot how to just fucking listen to a bird for a minute or two?
birds are disappearing sadly
Not Today, NSA!
We know about the drones.
Just ignore the doom sayers. Much better that way.
Today we drink, tomorrow we die.
Also: get off social media. I’m much happier without Reddit and I’m beginning to realise I need to leave all social media, including Lemmy.
Westerners : can’t buy a house in my 30s. Feel bad man. Wish I didn’t live in such hard times.
Every migrant on earth : feeling bad for you guys.
Eh, Millenials have the luxury of probably being dead by the time that Gen Z and those afterwards inherit the “real shit” historical moments. We’re still in the “I sleep” part of the meme, fortunately(?).
I’ll remember this during the upcoming Australian bushfire season
Just because things are going to be worse in the future doesn’t mean they’re not shit now.
